Trayless System

Hello Residence students,

Yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting with The Dean of Residence and his Leadership Team.

Some of the many things discussed included a change to the style of service St John's is going to offer you, the residence students.

The team suggested that we move away from a tray service to a tray-less system.

This will mean that you will take a plate and put it on the table and then get your beverage, cutlery and such, from inside the dining hall. You may make more than one trip to the servery area in order to take soup, salad and a main course, but the consensus was that this would provide a better dining experience, so we will give it a shot.

This will also mean that residence students will be responsible for scraping and stacking their plates. A station will be set up to do this at the south end of the dining hall.

Another topic that we spoke about was a condiment bar. This will be in place by the end of the week.

During the exam period a snack is provided every evening starting on December 6th right up until the evening of the 18th.

I wish you all the best performance with your exams, and thank you for the opportunity to provide your meals here at St John's.

Sign In Sheet

Dear St John’s College residence students,

If I may I would like to start this note with a request.

Please sign the Residence Meal plan sign in sheet for all of your meals

Over the past two and a half months you that you have lived in St John’s College Residence I have had the opportunity to meet with many of you to explain my role here, or to check in with you to see that you are comfortable in your accommodations and enjoying the meal plan that is offered.

This note is my attempt to check in with you again and insure that you are aware of my support and let you know my role at the College. First of all, I would like to welcome you to St John's and thank you for the opportunity to provide you with your meals while you live here.

My role is to provide food and beverage service in the Residence, the Daily Bread Cafe, espresso 101, and to internal and external catering clients. I also help to coordinate repairs to the facility in conjunction with the Dean of Residence, the student leadership team, and the Bursar and Amy in the General office.

My office is located in the main college, room 207, and my office phone number is 474-6826. Please feel free to contact me to discuss the meal plan, as I am open to any and all questions concerns or ideas. If it's more convenient for you to speak with The Dean of Residence or a student leader, please take advantage of their role to get your message to me.

Residence meals are provided in a self-serve buffet format. You must sign in and have your residence I.D. on your meal tray at each meal. Weekly menus are posted just outside of the Residence kitchen, and are also posted on the residence web page. These menus are written on Wednesdays and begin on Sundays. The residence meal plan allows you to take as much or as little of the food provided as you are going to eat. Wastage of food left on trays and plates costs the program and reduces the choices available. So please take your meals with this in mind. Meals are offered in the residence dining hall and must be consumed in the dining hall unless previous arrangements have been made.

Bagged meal forms can be found just outside the kitchen. They must be filled in one day ahead and given to the staff in either the kitchen (breakfast and saved supper) or Daily Bread Café (bagged lunch). Fines are issued to students taking plates, water glasses, cutlery etc. out of the dining hall, so please do not do this. When you are bringing a friend to a meal, please either make sure they have a meal ticket (available from the Dons’ team or the General Office), or that they provide their own food and beverage.

I have been with St John's for almost two decades so I am sure you will understand providing meals and a safe and comfortable environment for our residence students is very important and rewarding to me.
