About St. Johns Residence

St John's is conveniently located near the University Centre, and is ideal for people seeking a smaller community on campus, where academics and residence social life are balanced in a fun, safe, and secure atmosphere. In order to help students focus on their studies, the residence has reasonable and regular quiet/study hours, which all residents agree to follow. Student Staff, called Dons of Residence, help students to integrate into residence and university life, and help to foster community. We also have an International Student Representative who helps international students with their particular needs and concerns. St John's Residence Student's Association offers an annual cycle of social events. Students are encouraged to join social and athletic programs, to excel academically, and to live and study in a close-knit community of up to 100 residents.

St John's Residence is part of a larger community on campus called St John's College. This College, affiliated with the Anglican Church of Canada, is a founding member College of the University. College members receive their degrees from the University of Manitoba. Students who live in residence become members of the College for a fee yearly $10 per academic term and receive all the benefits of membership. For more information on the College, see www.umanitoba.ca/colleges/st_johns.

What is St John’s College?

St John’s College, affiliated with the Anglican Church of Canada, is a founding and member college of the U of M. We are older than the University and we helped to start the University. College members receive their degrees from the University of Manitoba. Students who live in residence become members of the College for a fee of $10 per academic term and receive all the benefits of membership. For more information on the College, see http://www.umanitoba.ca/colleges/st_johns

Why should I choose to live on campus?

Students who live on campus tend to do better academically and graduate sooner than students who live off campus. Convenience is a big factor... you can get up at 8:00 AM, and still be on time for that 8:30 class! All of the recreational and academic facilities of the University of Manitoba are right on your doorstep. Your meals are prepared for you, washrooms and common areas are cleaned for you... this is not only a great convenience, it is also a huge time-saver. There is also the added bonus of a ready-made community of students, which adds an all-important human face to your academics

Wouldn't it be cheaper to live off campus?

Some people can live off campus and make it work quite nicely, but once you add your rent and utilities, food costs, transportation, and leave some slack for when you are running short on time to cook and end up doing the fast food thing, you begin to see that residence rates are pretty competitive. Add to that all of the time you save by not having to commute, by not having to cook, by not having to do extensive housework or grocery shopping, and you begin to realize just how economical residence really is.

But why live in St John's?

With a community of just 100 residents, it is easy to feel at home. Programs, activities, intramural teams, socials, Residence Council, Dons' Programs, banquets and other special events combine to give a real vibrancy to our community life. Our student tutors, study hall, computer lab and study/quiet hours enhance your ability to perform academically.

What about the Meal Plan?

Your food plan consists of 19 buffet style meals per week. Meals are prepared in our kitchen under the direction of our Food Services Manager. We provide a healthy balance of foods, with an abundance of fresh produce, as well as student favorites. Our kitchen does attempt to cater to people requiring a low-meat or pork free diet. All residents accept our basic meal plan of 19 meals per week, plus a Sunday evening snack. We like to boast that we have the best food on campus, and believe that we are fully justified in doing so!

Tell me again about these Quiet Hours...

Basically, we ask that people keep their noise within the confines of their own rooms. For a stretch of time over lunch and supper, and for an hour later in the evening, we move into "loud hours" mode, when the general volume and activity goes up... On Friday and Saturday nights, "loud hours" extend to 1:00 AM. “Loud hours" aren't utter chaos; people still need to find ways to live together!

Are there any religious requirements?

No. Any University of Manitoba student is eligible to live in residence. St John's College is affiliated with the Anglican Church of Canada but there is no religious requirement. We do have a chaplaincy program, with Sunday afternoon chapel services, informal prayer times and chapel events. All are welcome to join in, regardless of faith affiliation. Part of what makes the place interesting is the diversity of religious views and practices represented within our residence population.
