Prof. Austin-Smith's teaching and research interests include Narrative Theory in fiction and film; television studies; film history, theory, and reception; melodrama; women and film; American literature, and documentary film.  She is at work on a long-term project studying inter-generational responses to the "weepie" or "woman's film".  She has articles published or forthcoming on Patricia Rozema, on narration in James' The Wings of the Dove, on symbolism in The Golden Bowl, and on emotional responses to melodrama.
