Birna Bjarnadóttir holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature, M.A. in Icelandic Literature and a Ph.D. in Icelandic Literature.  She studied German Literature and aesthetics at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Comparative and Icelandic literature at the University of Iceland, and Continental Aesthetics at the University of Warwick, England.  She specializes in modern Icelandic literature, aesthetics and history of ideas.  Medieval Icelandic literature is another field of expertise.  She wrote her doctoral thesis on aesthetics in Gudbergur Bergsson's work.

Before chairing the Department of Icelandic, Birna taught for several years at the University of Iceland, both in the Department of Icelandic Language and Literature and the Department of Comparative Literature and Linguistics.  She also worked as a Freelance critic for the Radio (Icelandic National Broadcasting Service) and Kistan, webreview, and as a project-manager at Snorrastofa, Reykholt.

Her book, Holdið hemur andann.  Um fagurfræði í skáldskap Guðbergs Bergssonar, [Spirit Incarnate. On Aesthetics in Gudbergur Bergsson's Work]  was published 2003, University of Iceland Press, Reykjavik.
