Dr. Bonnie Hallman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography.  She holds an Honours BA in Human Geography (1987), a Masters in Rural Geography (1991), and a PhD in Rural Resource Analysis (1997) all from the University of Guelph.  She has also worked as a market and social research analyst and in distance education.  Dr. Hallman has been at the University of Manitoba since 2001.  Previous to her arrival in Winnipeg, she was on the faculty in the Department of Geography and Planning, California State University, Chico.

Her research interests include several areas within rural, social and cultural geography.  Specifically, her current work focuses on geographies of aging and healthcare (with a focus on rural areas, family care, and international medical migration), and on geographies of gender, development and spatiality.  Her most recent publications have appeared in Social Science and Medicine, The Canadian Journal on Aging, and in Canadian International Development Agency monographs.  She is currently working on projects on department store restaurants as gendered sites of consumption, and on the evolving gender-geographies of Chinese women in rural-enterprise zones.  Dr. Hallman has spoken before a wide range of audiences in Canada, the United States, China and New Zealand.
