Over the past several years Gene has become increasingly interested in Canadian Films and in animation; he has just finished two books on these subjects: _Canada's Best Features: Critical Essays on 15 Canadian Films_ and _Cartoon Charlie_, a biography of one of Winnipeg's great contributions to "the golden age of American animation" -- Charlie Thorson, the designer of Bugs Bunny, Sniffles the Mouse, Little Hiawatha, Punkinhead, Elmer the Safety Elephant and hundreds of others. _Cartoon Charlie_ won the award for Best Illustrated Book of the Year and the Margaret McWilliams Medal for Best Popular History. Gene has also written a couple of film scripts: "The Washing Machine" (which he also directed), shown on CBC-TV, and "Birding for Kids" (which he also produced), shown on PBS-TV. Among his many articles for publications in North America and Europe are essays on Francois Truffaut, gangster films, animation, Canadian and Manitoba films and filmmakers. Recently he has also returned to acting after a 35-year hiatus, playing the President of Swingmore College (a singing and dancing role!) in the revival of You Can't Beat Fun! and appearing in several locally-produced short films.
