Student accounts are shut down upon graduation and when students do
not register for a term, with exceptions made for winter term accounts
over the summer.
Employee accounts are shut down when the employment or appointment
ends. If you are on a leave of absence, maternity leave, or sabbatical,
your accounts will remain active. If you are a retiree with benefits,
contact the ACN Computer Accounts Office for information about keeping
your UMnetID for email, internet, and JUMP access.
What you should do before your account expires:
- We recommend that you set a forwarding address and auto-reply on your email. Go to mail.cc.umanitoba.ca
and select Basic (Easysieve). To set both options, select "Leaving
Permanently." To set only one option, select either "Forward your mail"
or "Set a vacation message." You can change these options at any time
until your account is archived, even after it has been shut down.
- Setting a forwarding address will ensure that you continue to get important UofM email such as library overdue notices.
- If
you do not set a forwarding address on your email, incoming email will
accumulate until your mailbox quota is reached. When this happens, new
email will be returned to sender after 5 days of attempted delivery.
- If leaving permanently, please unsubscribe from any mailing lists you've joined from your UofM address.
- If
you are graduating and already have another email address, you may wish
to sign up for a mail-forwarding address for life through the
University of Manitoba Alumni Association. This will be different from
your cc address and will end in @umalumni.mb.ca. See details.
Set up your alumni address first, directing it to your new email
address. Then forward your cc account to your alumni address-for-life.
You can redirect your alumni address in the future whenever you change
email accounts.
- If your department or advisor requires any data that are stored in your accounts, make sure you have handed it over to them.
What happens to expired accounts:
- You will not be able to login to your IST accounts, including JUMP, email, and the machines in our computer labs.
- Students can still check their marks and re-register through Aurora using their student numbers and PINs. Aurora is available from the umanitoba.ca homepage.
- If you have created your own personal web page at home.cc.umanitoba.ca, it will no longer be displayed.
- If set, email forwarding and auto-replies will continue to function until your email account is archived.
- Your
email and Unix files, including web pages, will remain online for at
east 6 months after expiry, until the account is archived. Archived
email and Unix files are kept for 5 years and can be restored on
request.
- If you return within 6
months of expiry, you can use claimid to reactivate your userid and
find your same files and email online. For security reasons, claimid
will not change or display your password.
- If
you return after your account has been archived, but before 5 years has
passed, claimid will reassign you the same userid and password. Your
old files and email will be restored only if you request them.
- If
you have forgotten your password, you can get a new one by visiting the
Computer Accounts or Support office with photo identification or by
phoning the Accounts Office and answering some questions to verify your
identity.
Student accounts over the summer:
- If you were registered during the winter term and had
active computer accounts, your accounts will remain available over the
summer even if you are not taking courses.
- If
you won't be using your email account over the summer, it is wise to
set a "vacation" message to advise your correspondents of this. Go to mail.cc.umanitoba.ca
and select Basic (Easysieve). Be aware your email will still accumulate
and may exceed your quota after which it will be returned to sender
with an over quota notice.
- When you return in the fall your password will not have changed.
- Accounts will expire in the fall if you do not register for the fall term.
