Firewalls

Personal Firewalls

A personal firewall is an application that permits or denys network connections between your system and the rest of the world.  Modern operating systems for Windows and Macintosh systems have a built-in firewall that is very easy to use.  We recommend users install or activate a personal firewall on their systems.

To confirm that a personal firewall is enabled on your Windows or Mac OS X system:

Windows XP (Service Pack 2/3)

  • Open the Control Panel
  • Select the Security Center
  • Firewall Status should be ON

Windows 7

  • Open the Control Panel
  • Select the System and Security Center
  • Select Check firewall status
  • You should see a Green Shield with a check on both Private and Public networks

Macintosh OS X

  • Open System Preferences
  • Select Security&Privacy from the Personal section
  • Select the Firewall tab
  • You should see Firewall: On

The built-in Windows and Mac OS firewalls are not your only option and many users or unit computer reps may choose to run another application.  No matter what personal firewall you choose, ensure that it is enabled and configured properly.

If your Firewall is not enabled and you require assistance, or for more information please contact the Help and Solutions Centre (474-8600 or support(at)umanitoba.ca).
