The New Year brings a new calendar to campus. On February 14, 2013, nTreePoint will be replaced as the university’s web-based events calendar system.
The new Events Calendar, built using Active Data’s software, is a significant improvement for both website visitors and content editors. The new system sports an enhanced design that is easier to read and navigate, but more importantly, includes a variety of search features. Events can be searched or sorted by category, keyword, and event or audience type. Individual events can also be shared via email, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media channels.
You can see the new Events Calendar here: umanitoba.ca/events
As of February 14, the following changes will be in effect:
• New campus events will be added exclusively to the new Events Calendar.
• The weekly EMEMO will point to the new Events Calendar and there will no longer be any events displayed from nTreePoint.
• umanitoba.ca landing page feeds will point to the new Events Calendar.
• nTreePoint will no longer be supported but will continue to be accessible as an online archive of past events.
All staff and students who currently enter events in nTreePoint are encouraged to attend a short training session prior to using the new system. Switching faculty and department web page feeds from nTreePoint to the new calendar is easy and can be done after training through IST has taken place. Please note that registration is required for upcoming training sessions. For further information contact Brian McLean at brian_mclean@umanitoba.ca.
Events Calendar FAQ
Is it true the University of Manitoba is getting a new events calendar?Yes! We are implementing a new and improved events calendar, built on software from Active Data Exchange. The new calendar will allow our events to be more easily searched, shared over social networks, synced with personal calendars, read on mobile devices and exported to third-party applications, to name just a few features.
I'm the person who posts events on behalf of our unit, what will this change mean for me?
For starters it means you have access to one of the most robust and modern events calendars on the web. Your visitors will be able to easily share your events on Facebook, check Google maps to find their exact locations, subscribe to future events on their iPhone, and so much more.
This change, however, will require a bit of training on your part. But don't worry, if you know how to work with nTreePoint, you shouldn't have any problem mastering the Active Data calendar. Please contact Brian McLean at brian_mclean@umanitoba.ca to set up a training session.
You will also have to change the events feed on your landing page to the new events calendar when you are ready. It's a very easy process, but important as it will allow visitors to see your events and access our new events calendar.
When will the switch to the new system take place?
As of February 14, new campus events will only be added to the new Events Calendar. nTreePoint will still be accessible but will no longer be supported. We will help facilitate the change. Anyone who is interested can contact Brian McLean at brian_mclean@umanitoba.ca.
What will happen to nTreePoint?
nTreePoint will still be accessible, though unsupported, until June 2013. That will allow people time to archive information they feel is relevant.
What about news?
We will also be replacing nTreePoint as our news system, however the new news system will be rolled out after the new events calendar is in place. Currently, we are exploring software that will best fit the needs of a new university-wide news platform. Until then, nTreePoint will continue to be used as our news system.
What about forms?
Those who use the forms feature within nTreePoint will be happy to know that we are currently evaluating how best to replace this feature, and invite you to contact us with ideas on how to move forward, so we can ensure we acquire the proper tools to meet users' needs.
Keep checking back to this FAQ page for updates! We will also be sending out updates through the weekly ememo, so stay tuned!
