Program Description
The Graduate Periodontics Program offered at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba, is an accredited Masters of Dentistry Program in Periodontics. Its main purpose is to provide dental graduates a comprehensive, scientifically-based program will enable them to undertake the practice of periodontics. The program is a minimum of 36 months duration and two students are accepted every other year.
The application deadline to be accepted for the program in 2011 is September 1st, 2010.Equipment and Facilities:
The graduate section of Periodontology has at its disposal a graduate clinic containing seven fully equipped dental units, laboratory and office space. Students also have a rotation to the hospital dental clinic is in service at the adjacent Health Sciences Centre.
Dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dental hygiene students are available to support activities of the Program.
Students are required to supply their own instruments (est. $6,200.00) and a camera set-up suitable for clinical photography (est. $2,400.00).

- Advanced Clinical Periodontics
- Biology and Pathology of the Periodontium
- Clinical Practice in Periodontics (including Hospital Dentistry)
- Occlusion
- Review of Periodontal Literature
- Implantology
Basic Science Courses:
- Advanced Anatomy of the Head and Neck
- Infectious Diseases and the Oral Cavity
- Advanced Oral Pathology
Supportive Courses:
- Oral Medicine and Oral Diagnosis
- Pharmacology and Therapeutics
- Biostatistics
The student will accumulate a minimum of 1,200 hours clinical experience of which approximately 100 hours will be spent in the hospital dental clinic. The clinical program will lead to proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of periodontal diseases, management of patients with facial pain and temporomandibular joint dysfunction and experience in implantology.
Research:
An essay and/or research project in a specified area selected in consultation with the Department Head, is a requirement.
Applicants for admission to the program of study leading to a Master of Dentistry (Periodontics) must have:
- dental degree
- An interview, as part of the admissions process. Usually held in October with final selection by early November of the year preceding admission.
- All non-Canadian citizens whose primary language is other than English must write the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and attain a score of at least 550.
Applications must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by September 1st of the year preceding admission.
