Deferred exam procedures

If you are unable to write a final exam because of illness or other disability or affliction, you must file an application in writing with the dean or director of your faculty/school for a deferred exam.

For more detailed information regarding exam deferral, see below

Is there a sample exam?

There may be a sample exam available for study purposes depending on what course you are enrolled in. Review your course manual and contact your instructor for more details.

I'm taking a Net-Based course. Will I take my exam on the WEB?

Final exams are never written over the Internet. You will be required to write your final exam in a classroom setting. If you live inside Winnipeg, you will be required to write your final exam at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus. If you are living outside Winnipeg, read the section above that describes out-of-town exam procedures.

Midterm exams or tests may be written on the web, depending on the course. In this case, the test would be accessed through ANGEL and there would be a time limit on how long you could spend writing it.

How do I find out if my course has a midterm exam?

Many courses include only assignments and final exams in their course work, others require students to write tests and/or midterm exams. The information regarding assignments and testing for your course should be included in your course manual introduction. If the information is not there, contact your instructor for clarification.

How can I access my exam marks?

An individual student's exam marks must be obtained from the course instructor; they cannot be released through the Distance Education Office, ANGEL or MyUMinfo. Contact your course instructor for details regarding exam marks.

Deferred exam procedures

If you are unable to write a final exam because of illness or other disability or affliction, you must file an application in writing with the dean or director of your faculty/school for a deferred exam. A deferred exam is offered under senate and faculty or school regulations in a manner prescribed by the appropriate department head.

The application must be filed within seven days of the last exam you are scheduled to write and it must be accompanied, or followed shortly, by a medical certificate or an appropriate document certifying your inability to write the exam at the regular scheduled time. Where possible, indicate the period of disability. Based on the evidence, the Dean or Director shall decide whether or not to approve the application.

When an application for a deferred examination is approved, the deferred exam will ordinarily be written within 30 working days from the end of the exam series from which the exam was deferred. You will be notified by your faculty/school regarding the status of your deferred exam application.
The Application for Deferred Examination(s) form is located in the Forms Appendix of your Distance Education Student Handbook or it can be accessed on-line at the following address:
