Communal Life on the Prairies: A Visit to James Valley Hutterite Colony
4176
9:00-4:00 p.m.
June 14 - Thursday
Learn about communal life on the prairies in this visit to James Valley Hutterite Colony near Elie, Manitoba. James Valley, founded in 1919, is one of the oldest colonies in Manitoba. Tour the colony, visit its agricultural operations, the kindergarten, the school, church, kitchen, laundry and more. A wonderful home cooked lunch in the colony dining hall will be provided as part of the tour (included in tour fee). We will have an opportunity to visit the colony bookstore, which has an excellent selection of books on Hutterite life and Anabaptist history. We will also visit the meat processing area where turkeys, ducks, geese, chickens (fryers and boilers) and, depending on availability, beef, will be available for purchase. So, if participants want to buy anything, they should bring cash, as the colony does not take credit cards. A cooler, marked with the owner's name, would be a good idea for anyone who is interested in buying meats. Departure time from the colony will depend on the weather and the interest of the group but we should be back in Winnipeg by four o'clock.
