The Manitoba Soil Science Society was organized in 1957 as a network to bring together pedologists and associates in related fields. Through the discussion of research and practical work in the various fields of soil science, the goal of the society is to achieve the following objectives:

  • Soil Scientists will gain a more comprehensive knowledge of experimental and practical programs being carried on in Manitoba.
  • Soil Scientists will be able to develop their own work programs based on a full knowledge of the most recent developments in other fields of pedology.
  • That a coordinated program of research, service and extension may be maintained among the several institutions engaged in various aspects of pedology.

Soils - a collection of natural bodies on the earth's surface capable of supporting plant life and with properties due to the integral effects of climate and living matter actingon parent material as conditioned by relief over periods of time.

Pedology - the study of soils as they relate to the environment in which they occur; the study of soil as an object of nature. Pedology (also known as soil science) can be subdivided into specific fields of study, including:

  • Soil Classification and Interpretation (Soil Landscape Processes)
  • Soil Chemistry and Fertility
  • Soil Management (Land Resource Management)
  • Environment: Soil and Sediment

The Society meets annually for a two-day scientific meeting and Annual General Meeting, and a field trip varying in length from 1 to 2 days.

newThe Provincial Soil Concept for Manitoba - The Newdale Soil

The Manitoba Soil Science Society is a proponate of officially designating the Newdale Soil as the Provincial Soil of Manitoba.

Soil is one of our most valuable natural resources. To ensure that we do not take this resource for granted, soils need to be protected and managed in a sustainable manner. Designation and proclamation of a Provincial Soil is one way to increase public awareness and create a greater appreciation for soils.

For further information about the proposed Provincial Soil see links below.
