Alison Murata (M.Sc. Student)

Alison Murata

Alison is in her second year of a M.Sc. degree in the Department of Soil Science. She was the 2011-2012 Soil Science Graduate Students' Association (SSGSA) President and the 2010-2011 SSGSA Secretary and Lunchroom Representative.  Alison enjoys conducting field work (especially when it involves rock climbing), travelling, playing soccer, and attempting to become completely fluent in French. Project Description:

Alison's M.Sc. research is on the remediation of contaminated land. Her first project focuses on the phytoremediation of mineral and organic soils contaminated with multiple trace elements. She is studying the impact of plant species and fertilizer addition on the phytoextraction of metals from soils contaminated by smelter emissions. Her second project is looking at the use of sodium dithionite and iron oxides in a reduction-adsorption remediation treatment for groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium.
