Don Flaten

Dr. Flaten's training includes a Ph.D. with specialization in Soil Chemistry and Fertility.

General Research Interests:

Effects of management practices on supplies of N, P, K, S and micronutrients supplied from soil reserves, various forms and types of fertilizers, livestock manures, industrial byproducts and municipal waste and their impact on crop yield, crop quality, agricultural sustainability and environmental quality.

Current Projects:

  • Effects of S nutrition on wheat quality
  • Effects of pulse crop rotations on wheat quality
  • Effects of timing, landscape position and nitrification inhibitors on efficiency of fall banded N
  • Effects of sample preparation and extraction on extractability of soil test S
  • Optimizing canola production systems: interactions between fertility, crop protection and genetics
  • Agronomic efficiency of homogeneous NPS fertilizer
  • Impacts of livestock management practices on nutrient loading in soil and transport to water
  • Risk of P transfer from agricultural land to surface water

Teaching Responsibilities:

SOIL 0630 - Soil Fertility
SOIL 4520 - Soil Fertility
