ABOUT WINNIPEG

Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba (population 740,000) and is located on the eastern edge of the Canadian prairies at the historic junction of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. There are a number of lakes and interesting sights within easy driving distance. Winnipeg is home to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, many live theatre companies, several sports teams and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

The University of Manitoba is located in southeast of Winnipeg and has approximately 25,000 students. As part of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, the Department of Plant Science is involved in educating students and maintaining an active research program directed at developing superior cultivars and new production systems suited to the changing needs of Manitoba farmers and the agri-food industry. Active research is conducted in areas such as plant breeding, molecular genetics, epidemiology, host-pathogen interactions, agronomy and crop management, weed control and physiology. Research spans a wide range of crops including canola, cereals, alfalfa, potatoes and ornamentals.
