Recruiting summer students in the agricultural sector
Most of the recruitment for summer students takes place in the fall, specially during Oct and Nov. Therefore, activities to promote vacancies such as postings and information sessions should be planned early on.

All organizations recruiting from our faculty for summer positions MUST present their job offers to students on a designated date (called offer date) or later. The offer date changes slightly every year, but usually is in mid to late Nov. Once it has been determined, organizations will be notified by e-mail and asked to acknowledge it. Offer date does not apply to organizations that wish to hire returning summer students or for permanent positions or to offers after the designated date. Please, contact the coordinator for your hiring needs. She will be happy to assist you. Her contact information is Dr. Laura Lazo, 204-487-4980, ag_job_placement@umanitoba.ca.

This year the offer date is : 21 Nov 2012

We assist employers in their recruitment efforts with the following:

  • Posting service
  • Coordination of information sessions and other recruitment events
  • Booking rooms for interviews
  • Promotion of organization
  • Cooperative Studies program
  • Support in any matter pertinent to recruitment

Posting service
With an average of 2500 hits each month, our website is the portal to hundreds of qualified students and graduates in the agricultural and food sectors. Being highly targeted, posting on our website offers very effective advertising. To see what our job pages look like, please, visit

Download the "Job Posting/Services Requests Order Form  and Invoice" to see fees and services. Your ad will be posted within 2 working days and will remain on the webpage until its dead line. Dead lines can be extended at no extra cost. While space is available, your ad is also placed on poster boards in high-traffic areas visited by students on daily basis.

To submit:
Please fax the filled-out Job Posting/Services Requests Order Form and Invoice, do not e-mail it please. Also, e-mail your job posting in PDF and/or logos to ag_job_placement@umanitoba.ca.

Postings MUST be in PDF and include the following information:

  1. Organization name
  2. Location of job
  3. Type of job: permanent, part-time, term, summer, coop, etc.
  4. Dead line for applications
  5. E-mail or website for applications

Ads without the above information will be returned for completion.

Coordination of information sessions and recruitment events
Information sessions are usually offered in the evenings but during the day is also possible. Please, call the coordinator (Dr. Laura Lazo 474-6943) for a discussion on the benefits of one or the other. To see fees and services and book your event, please, download the Job Posting/Services Requests Order Form and Invoice and fax it to (204) 474-7525.

Booking rooms for interviews
A limited number of rooms are available to companies interviewing our students for job opportunities.  Please, download the Job Posting/Services Requests Order Form and Invoice for fees.  Fax it to (204) 474-7525 indicating dates and whether you need the room the whole day or morning or afternoon only. Please, note that rooms are in high demand particularly in Oct and Nov. It is highly recommended that you send us your request at least one week prior to your interviews. Questions? Contact Dr. Laura Lazo at 204-474-6943 or ag_job_placement@umanitoba.ca.

Promotion of your organization
Recruiting the right people for your vacancies can be hard, particularly at times of the year when the supply of candidates is low. An effective way to advertise your organization and vacancies is by hosting an information session. Please, see above. Another way to attract attention to your openings and casting a wide net at the same time is by posting your ad on our job's pages (see above). Adding a logo to the ad attracts further attention. Logos can be small or large, and clickable. Small logos are placed next to your organization's name. Large logos appear on the right side of the page. You can enhance the effectiveness of your large logo even more by making it clickable. Candidates clicking on your large logo will be directed to your careers/job page on your website.  They will then be exposed to your other vacancies and bookmark your page for the future.  For fees, please, see contact Dr. Laura Lazo at 204-474-6943 or ag_job_placement@umanitoba.ca.

Cooperative Studies program
The cooperative studies program offers another option to retain the right candidates because it attracts students that are keen in learning more out of their work experience. Jobs in the agricultural and food sector can be made coop jobs by you or the student. The coop coordinator provides you with all the support you need during the recruitment phase and the work term. The program requires little involvement from you. It can be as little as 1 hour in the entire term. For more information on the coop program, please, click here.  There are also wage incentives available to employers that hire co-op students. For tax credits, click here, for other alternatives, please, contact the coordinator at 204-474-6943, or ag_job_placement@umanitoba.ca.
