Service Learning

Service learning involves working for others while at the same time learning.  There are many benefits for you.  When working off-shore, you learn about different cultures, life-perspectives, and about yourself. You also gain valuable work experience and knowledge relevant to your studies and future career.  Positions are unpaid.  However, sometimes, subsidies to off-set costs are available.  Opportunities for off-shore service learning are available through the Office of Student Life and the International Centre for Students.

Volunteering

The following organizations have opportunities for you:

Student Life at the UM

International Centre for Students

Food Matters Manitoba

Please, contact the coordinator to find out about other alternatives.

Internships

Internships are temporary work placements for students or new grads for the purpose of gaining familiarity with the host organization and the experience and knowledge needed to obtain permanent employment.  They offer the benefits of international experiences and professional development.  Internships may be not-paid or involve a stipend.  They are offered by a wide variety of organizations, e.g., companies, not-for profit associations, institutions, etc.  Please, contact the coordinator to find out about potential opportunities.

Study Exchanges

Study exchanges involve students taking credit-courses in other institutions, local or overseas.  They are a way to advance your study program and development as professionals.  Exchanges are also fun and an opportunity to learn about other countries and have friends from other cultures.  Many off-shore universities offer courses in English.  Costs are kept to a minimum.  When there is an agreement between universities, you pay fees only to the UM.  Our faculty also has scholarships and other funding to further off-sets your travel costs.  Often these experiences are not beyond student's means.  Please, see our current opportunities.  For alternatives, please, visit the International Centre for Students and Student Life.
