DR. ANNEMIEKE FARENHORST

Dr. Farenhorst joined the Department of Soil Science in May, 1998. Training includes a B.Sc. in Physical Geography and Soil Science (University of Amsterdam) and a Ph.D. in Soil Pesticide Chemistry (University of Toronto).

Current Research Interests

Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst is leading the pesticide research team in the Department of Soil Science. Its team members focus on experimental, monitoring and modeling studies to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of pesticide fate in soil and water at various scales. Additional research consists of experimental work on the retention and degradation of natural steroidal estrogens in soil. Farenhorst is also a collaborator on a community-based project in Central America: http://www.umanitoba.ca/afs/centralamerica_cbpm/home_en.htm

If you want to know more about the pesticide research team and their projects and publications, or about the courses that Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst is teaching, please check out her web-site at http://farenhorst.ca/

Current Research Projects

  • Pesticide monitoring in air, rainfall, dust particles and wetland water.
  • Experimental studies of pesticide and estrogen sorption and degradation in soils.
  • Pesticide fate modelling at field, regional and national levels.
  • Assessment of risk of pesticide contamination in the Assiniboine delta aquifer.
  • Developing the on-line pest control guide for fruit and vegetable producers in Manitoba.
  • Community-based pest management in Central American agriculture.
  • Pesticide indicators, performance standards and risk assessments for policy analysis.
  • Near-infrared spectroscopy applications in soil science.
