Experimental Building Construction,
La Ciudad Abierta (The “Open City"),
Ritoque, Chile (2003- Present)

CAST and the Catholic University of Valparaiso are engaged in a long-term collaboration to design and construct experimental fabric-formed concrete architecture at the Open City in Ritoque Chile. As a part of the extraordinary experimental architecture of the Open City, this research and construction collaboration embraces both the poetic and technical dimensions of architecture.

Students of architecture and engineering, in collaboration with Prof. Mark West, have invented, developed, and built prototype fabric formwork and prototype pre-cast structural components for Open City constructions. Our Chilean collaborators include Open City architects Miguel Eyquem and David Jolly with seismic and structural design consultant Luis Adolfo Della Valle Solari. Members of the C.A.S.T. design team include: Architecture students Philip Christensen, Warren Schmidt, Chris Weibe, and PhD Engineering student Faribours Hashemian.
