CAST has developed numerous techniques for casting sculptural and variously profiled columns for architectural uses, as well as for special structural situations. This is one of the most elegant uses of fabric molds, as a vertical tube of fabric filled with wet concrete will naturally form a perfect cylinder. The formwork required to cast cylindrical columns is extremely simple, and uses an absolute minimum of material (hundreds of times less material than conventional rigid formwork constructions). Properly designed, a fabric column form can be reused many times. The architectural and sculptural freedom made possible by flexible column forms allows the invention of entirely new “orders” of sculptural/structural columns.
