U of M Association of Planning Students (UMAPS)
UMAPS is a student information and support service for all Planning students. Students can get involved in event planning and organizing student-related activities from social events to more routine committee work. The UMAPS meets regularly during the school term and is open to all students. As planning is a professional/academic program, the UMAPS is linked to many groups and organizations both on- and off-campus. The association is administered by several executive positions. Each position plays an important role in student, departmental and faculty affairs. Membership is highly recommended, there is a $30 fee. UMAPS produces a regular email newsletter during the school term for its members.

Where possible student field trips have been planned to facilitate attendance at the Canadian Association of Planning Students (CAPS-ACEAU) Conference. As the national non-profit organization that has existed since 1975, CAPS has decades worth of highly successful events to celebrate. These are times to get together and share ideas about planning. (Students are also encouraged to attend and participate where possible, the Planners Network Conference and CIP Conference. See for example, report by John Koch-Schulte on the Planners Network Conference 2005 in Menneapolis. )

CAPS Conference 2001
The Studio 2 Field trip (Feb. 08-14) was to Toronto, to facilitate attendance at the CAPS Conference.
This 2001 annual student-run conference was organized by York University from February 13 to 16. In light of recent trends to expand notions of planning, the organizers chose the theme "Pushing the Boundaries: Planning('s) Radical Projects." Through this they managed to impart an idea of inclusion while broadening discussion about the role of the planner. The conference provided innovative perspectives on communicative action planning, environmental planning, housing, community services, waterfront regeneration, and planning in multicultural communities, with the intention to illuminate the radical planning processes that help to shape and change the planning profession.
John Forester, noted critical communication theorist and author of "The Deliberative Practitioner" and "Planning in the Face of Power", delivered the keynote address. Forester is a proponent of participatory planning practices and citizen involvement, and his participation will bring our event to the international stage. He draws on political science, law, philosophy and literature to explore the challenges and possibilities of deliberative planning practices.

Dr. John Forester, Cornell University and Dr. Mark Seasons, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners (2001) .
The conference included imaginative workshops, field trips, plenary discussions, a design charette with community groups, and a forum for sharing innovative trajectories in planning.
The CAPS 2002 Conference was in Montreal hosted by Universite de Montreal. The 2003 Conference was in Halifax in January. The CAPS 2004 is to be in Saskatoon. Information and links will be posted here when available.
