Experimental City
The Experimental City
Chad Freidrichs
(2017) 58 minutes

From the director of "The Pruitt-Igoe Myth" comes the story of MXC (Minnesota Experimental City). In the 1960s, the visionary scientist and comic strip artist Athelstan Spilhaus hoped to build a “City of the Future”. This doomed experimental city was to be a domed metropolis (inspired by Bucky Fuller) complete with self-driving cars, and other urban innovations configured—with "Jetsons" style cunning—to overcome the modern plagues of urban sprawl and pollution. Like many “Smart City” schemes today, this futurist dream didn’t go as planned. Come find out why it was resisted by citizens doubtful of the project’s motives
and promises.
Presented in partnership with Winnipeg's annual Architecture + Design Film Festival with support from the Faculty of Architecture Endowment Fund.
