Admissions
ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR OPTION 1 OR OPTION 2.

The Faculty will select applicants using a tiered admission process beginning with the highest Accumulated Grade Point Average (AGPA) in the first priority category and continuing in descending order as outlined below until all the spaces are filled.

To be considered
for Option 1 admission an applicant must have completed 30 credit hours of university-level course work as described below with an overall minimum AGPA of 2.50. Applicants applying to be considered under Option 1 must have taken the following courses: EVDS 1600 Introduction to Environmental Design (3 credit hours), EVDS 1660 History of Culture, Ideas and Environment 1 (3 credit hours), EVDS 1670 History of Culture, Ideas and Environment 2 (3 credit hours), EVDS 1602 Visual Literacy (3 credit hours) with a minimum grade of C+ in each course, plus six credit hours of Faculty of Arts courses, six credit hours of Faculty of Science courses and six credit hours of courses offered by either Arts or Science with a minimum grade of C in each course.  Students are also required to complete, within these 30 credit hours, three credit hours meeting the ‘written English (W) requirement’ and three credit hours meeting the ‘Mathematics (M) requirement’.

To be considered for Option 2 admission, applicants who are missing one or more of the required Environmental Design courses under Option 1 can apply under the Option 2 category. To be considered for Option 2, an applicant must have completed 30 credit hours of university-level coursework with a grade of C or better in each course and with an overall minimum AGPA of 2.50. Course work must consist of six credit hours of arts courses, six credit hours of science courses, six credit hours of arts or science courses, and 12 credit hours of open elective courses. Students are also required to complete, within these 30 credit hours, three credit hours meeting the ‘written English (W) requirement’ and three credit hours meeting the ‘Mathematics (M) requirement’.

1st priority: Option 1 applicants 3.50 and higher AGPA
2nd priority: Option 2 applicants 3.50 and higher AGPA
3rd priority: Option 1 applicants 3.00 – 3.49 AGPA
4th priority: Option 2 applicants 3.00 – 3.49 AGPA
5th priority: Option 1 applicants 2.50 – 2.99 AGPA
6th priority: Option 2 applicants 2.50 – 2.99 AGPA


Following is a more detailed description of the Options.


OPTION 1


PART A: 12 credit hours of required courses offered by the Faculty of Architecture.

EVDS 1600 Introduction to Environmental Design (3 credit hrs)
An introduction to the philosophy and pragmatics of design and designing processes and methods. The focus will be on design as a creative, aesthetic and scientific endeavour, and will examine the challenges and roles of environmental designers in society.

EVDS 1660 History of Culture, Ideas and Environment 1 (3 credit hrs)
A brief history of the western creative imagination, part 1. Interdisciplinary survey of cultural periods and key works from the Foundations of Civilization to the Enlightenment, including literary readings, film screenings, and illustrated lectures and discussions. Available to non-Environmental Design students only.

EVDS 1670 History of Culture, Ideas and Environment 2 (3 credit hrs)
A brief history of the western creative imagination, part 2. Interdisciplinary survey of cultural periods and key works from the 19th to the 21st centuries, including literary readings, film screenings, and illustrated lectures and discussion. Prerequisite: EVDS 1660 (or 079.166). Available to non-Environmental Design students only

EVDS 1602 Visual Literacy (3 credit hrs)
This course examines the contemporary visual environment, its critical historical influences, and more recent cultural impacts. Optics, the structure of images, and the importance of materiality will be examined through various modes of cultural production including emerging media and information networks.

Students from other post-secondary institutions, who are planning to apply to the Environmental Design Program are encouraged to seek out courses that are equal or similar to those noted above.

PART B: 18 credit hours of required courses as follows:

6 credit hours Faculty of Arts
6 credit hours Faculty of Science
6 credit hours of either Arts or Science

OPTION 2

Applicants who are missing one or more of the required Environmental Design courses under Option 1 can apply under the Option 2 category. Course work must consist of:

6 credit hours Faculty of Arts
6 credit hours Faculty of Science
6 credit hours of either Arts or Science, and
12 credit hours of Open Elective courses

Note 1
Recommended courses that will satisfy the Faculty of Arts requirement:
ANTH 1220 or ANTH 1520, CDN 1130, ECON 1220ENGL 0930 (W), ENGL 1310 (W), FILM 1290, GEOG 1280 or GEOG 1290, HIST 1260 (W), HIST 1270, HIST 2280 (W), PHIL 1290, RLGN 1420 (W), WOMN 1540 (W).   
Recommended courses that will satisfy the Faculty of Science requirement: BIOL 1010, FA 1020 (M), MATH 1300 (M), PHYS 1410, ZOOL 1320, ENVR 1000, GEOL 1360

Courses offered in the Department of Geography in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba will satisfy the Faculty of Arts course requirements and courses offered through the Departments of Environmental Science and Geological Science in the same Faculty will satisfy the Faculty of Science course requirements.

To satisfy the Arts, Sciences and Elective course requirements, students from other post-secondary institutions, are encouraged to seek out courses that are equal or similar to the following:
