Association of Manitoba Archaeologists
Since its inception in 1975, the Association of Manitoba Archaeologists (AMA)
has served to strengthen the profession of archaeology in Manitoba
by acting as a channel of communication between its members,
various levels of government, and the national and international community
at large.
The organization was incorporated in 1984, with the following goals established:
- to promote the profession and the practice of archaeology in Manitoba;
- to foster cooperation in research and the free interchange of archaeological
information;
- to promote the protection of archaeological resources;
- to implement and support programs of public education about archaeology;
- to actively seek and support policies at all levels of government which assist and
encourage our aims;
- to encourage other institutions which deal with archaeology.
An elected Executive conducts the routine administrative tasks of the Association. A system of committees
undertake special projects, such as liaising with governments and other associations, organizing
conferences, preparing literature reviews, or recommending site protection. The Association meets
regularly throughout the year in order to conduct general business. Special events, such as the occasional
guest speaker or a workshop on a specific topic in archaeology, are also held from time to time as the
opportunities arise.
In the past the AMA has recommended guidelines for archaeological impact assessments under the new
Manitoba Heritage Act; lead support for the placement at Manitoban universities of persons who actively
promote the education and research of archaeology in the province; encouraged the greater use of
archaeological resources in the management of the environment; held a public symposium at the
Canadian Archaeological Association (1985) conference; published a volume of scholarly papers in
cooperation with the Manitoba Archaeological Society; and implemented the first annual Archaeology
Month program (1995) in the province. Members of the AMA are continuing to initiate similar activities.
Membership is open to anyone, and members agree to abide by the regulations and By-Laws pertaining to
the Association. Benefits include membership rates for specific events, voting privileges at meetings of the
Association, special discounts on certain merchandise, and you will be supporting the many worthwhile
projects that the AMA sponsors.
