The field of World History has been a growing area of scholarship and education over the last two decades. In focusing on the global impact and implications of colonialism, imperialism, and the mercantile and industrial revolutions from the early-modern period to the present, World History has sought to provide a framework for understanding international capitalism, contemporary politics, and the relationship between economic systems and the dynamics of diverse societies.

This conference will examine the relationship between the historical roots and contemporary social, political, and economic dimensions of World History. The conference will address a number of issues under this rubric including: authoritarian capitalism and human rights; labour, work, and the history of migration; global finance and neo-imperialism; class and global development; the political economy of gender and sexuality; democratic and popular resistance to global capitalism; and revolution and world history.

The History Department at the University of Manitoba has been at the forefront of teaching and research in World History in Canada and internationally. Drawing upon this legacy and the ongoing contributions to scholarship in Modern World History, we are very pleased to host the World History and Historical Materialism Conference.
