Our courses are open to all learners. There are 30 certificate programs, diplomas and letters of accomplishment, and over 150 courses and seminars to choose from. If you are unsure of what you want to study or have any questions please call us.

When do I find out if I have been accepted in my program?

You will be notified by mail one to two weeks after your Application to Enter Certificate Program is received. If you have not received confirmation by then, please contact your Program Administrator.

I’m a new student, how do I enter the Student Access Site (SAS)?

When you register for a course, you must provide your birth date as requested on the registration form, so we can assign you a U of M student number. This student number gives you access to the Student Access Site (SAS). When you register, we e-mail you your student number and a temporary password. If you have been a U of M degree student, you will be assigned your previous student number.

If you have any questions about accessing the SAS or do not have a student number or valid password, please call (204) 474-8016, toll-free 1-888-216-7011 ext 8016 or e-mail: extended@umanitoba.ca.

When do I get my course registration confirmation/course grade?

This information is found at the new Student Access Site at www.extended.umanitoba.ca/sas/. You can also access SAS from the Continuing Education homepage www.umanitoba.ca/extended/coned. In addition to Confirmation of Registration Letters (which lists location of courses and any textbooks), you can also view and/or print Grade Letters and Tax Receipts (T2202A), view your contact information and student record. We no longer mail out any of these items. Please note that grades will not be released over the telephone.

Students may register for further courses prior to receiving a prerequisite course grade. If the prerequisite course is not successfully completed, the student may withdraw and receive a full refund.

Why am I having a problem registering online?

The online registration system will not accept registrations after the course start date. If your program has approved your late registration, you will have to register in person or by fax. There are a few courses that may not accept online registrations at any time. Please contact Student Registration and Records at (204) 474-8016 if you encounter problems registering online before the course start date.

I called your office and the staff won't give me my marks.

Our policy is to ensure student confidentiality and our staff members are not authorized to provide this information. Please contact the Program Administrator if you have any concerns.

What texts and supplies do I need for this course?

What happens if I know I'm going to miss a class?

We encourage you to attend all your classes - even if 100% attendance is not a requirement for your course. If you must miss a class, please inform your instructor.

What is ANGEL?

ANGEL is a web-based Course Management System (CMS) that allows instructors to manage course materials and communicate with students. ANGEL can function as a complement to face-to-face courses and as a site for distance learning; all of Continuing Education’s distance courses and many face-to-face courses have an ANGEL website. Course manuals for distance courses are posted in the ANGEL course website. Course outlines and other documents are often posted in ANGEL.

Depending on your course and the instructor, you may use ANGEL to send and receive course mail; post messages to threaded discussions and chat rooms; upload assignments and check your grades for assignments during a course. Not all courses will use all the tools.

Where do I get my ID and password for ANGEL?

If this is your first course with us, Continuing Education staff will e-mail you your ID and password after you are registered in a course. You will use the same ID and password for all subsequent courses.
If you register late, be prepared to wait 24 hours before your ID/Password will give you access to ANGEL.

Note: This is not the same password and ID used to login to the SAS (Student Access Site).

How do I logon to ANGEL and get to my course?

You’ll find the ANGEL homepage at www.umanitoba.ca/angel .
Once you’ve logged on, you’ll be in your ANGEL homepage where you’ll see a list of any courses in which you are currently registered. Click on the course title to get into the course website. Most course information, e.g., assignments, instructor contact information, etc, will be found under the Lessons tab.

Do I have the technology required to access distance education courses?

To access a course web site on ANGEL you must be using Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2 or higher as your browser. MAC users must use Firefox 2. The System Check information, on the left margin of the ANGEL Learning home page (umanitoba.ca/angel) will help you determine if your browser and plug-ins are adequate.

An online course using a virtual classroom such as iVocalize, will require an inexpensive headset and microphone.

Where can I find information on how to improve my learning skills?

The University of Manitoba, Learning Assistance Centre is geared toward assisting you in increasing your skills in: reading and mastering new material, academic research and writing, and test taking.

Can I transfer courses that I have taken from another institution?

Credit towards a certificate may be granted for courses taken from other educational institutions, from another faculty at the U of M, or in another Continuing Education Certificate program. We recommend that you contact the Program Administrator prior to applying for credit.

How do I access the libraries?

Please go to http://umanitoba.ca/libraries/ then Services then My Library Account. You will be asked for your Student Number/Library ID and a PIN. You can use your student number assigned when you registered and your PIN will be your birth date. This takes a couple of days to activate. Access to your account is terminated within about 2 weeks after the course ends.

In person: Students must present a student ID card. Or you can also use your Confirmation of Registration which can printed off the Student Access Site ( SAS) in Extended Education.

Note: This will not work for any student who did not include an e-mail address when they registered with Continuing Education.
