Letter of Accomplishment in Records and Information Management

The Program

The Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) and the University of Manitoba have worked with other leaders in the profession to develop a program designed to meet the specialized needs of records and information managers. New legislation, the explosion of electronic records, and changing business practices require more knowledge and skills. You need to understand essential management concepts and have a firm grasp of legal, financial, technological and archival issues related to best practice. The Letter of Accomplishment in Records and Information Management has been designed to prepare you to meet these challenges.

Please note that Records and Information Management: The Records Continuum is the pre-requisite for Strategic Information Management.

Flexible Study Option (FSO) Guidelines

What is Flexible Study

Flexible Study (FSO) in the CAM: RIM program can be used as an elective. Students must successfully complete the required courses of the program to request a FSO.

FSO is designed to promote the integration and application of knowledge to practical problems and the challenges encountered in the workplace. FSO takes place under the supervision of an instructor or advisor. The intention is to design and conduct an independent study that integrates and applies the knowledge and skills learned in the program. The objectives are to:

• Involve students in the practical application of records and information management (RIM) skills and knowledge
• Provide students with direct experience in defining, evaluating and solving RIM issues, challenges, and problems
• Provide experience in proposal and report writing
• Enhance the written and verbal communications skills of students
• Provide students with practice in research and analytical skills

FSO Options:

Option 1, Credit for Seminar – if you have taken a seminar through the University of Manitoba or another institution, relevant to the field/discipline of records and information management, you can request credit by submitting the following documents:

•A copy of the course curriculum e.g. a course syllabus/outline, the outline should contain the seminar objectives, seminar topics and seminar assessment/evaluation requirements.
• A detailing of the assessment/evaluation component e.g. assignments, quizzes, projects, exercises, pass/fail requirements.
• The duration/length of the seminar e.g. 120 hours.
• When it was taken, days/months/years.
• Credentials of who taught the seminar e.g. name, title, credential notations such as Masters, Certifications etc. professional affiliation or experience.

This information will be reviewed and determination regarding credit equivalency will be made. The student will pay a course credit transfer fee of $75.00 for all seminars taken external to Continuing Education.

Option 2, Flexible study (36 hours) - is designed to provide flexibility in content and delivery, where an individual or group of students can meet with an instructor/advisor and the Program Director to design an elective course that meets a particular learning need. Although the design of the elective course should be in collaboration with the instructor/advisor it should allow the student(s) to explore an area of their interest. The flexible study course may be a special topics course, a practicum, an individual reading course or a small group seminar. The flexible elective must be equivalent to 36 hours.

Option 3, Flexible Study Applied Project (36 hours) - is designed to enable students to learn about applied research, evaluation and analysis by initiating and completing an applied project in one or more of these four areas. A variety of project types and designs are discussed with an instructor/advisor and the Program Director, to find an appropriate form for the specific project as chosen by the student and derived from their workplace. Although the design of the project should be in collaboration with the instructor/advisor it should allow the student(s) to explore an area of their interest. Projects are generally individual although, on occasion, student teams may collaborate on a project. The project should be equivalent to a 36 hour course.

Once a student has decided on the type of FSO they wish to undertake, they must assume full responsibility for identifying an instructor/advisor and discussing their option with the instructor/advisor who must be willing to commit their time in supporting the student through completion of the FSO. The instructor/advisor must submit details regarding the elective course or project and its evaluation/assessment requirements for approval to the Program Director.

Pursuit of a FSO is not for everyone. Your FSO will depend on your strengths, skills and knowledge, interests, creativity and the opportunities available to you. Ease of access to resources in your workplace/community can dramatically affect your progress through the FSO. Your FSO can be technically oriented or policy driven. The ability to complete a FSOs can be limited by the availability and approval of an instructor/advisor.

FSO Application and Registration

Once the student has identified the type of FSO and has received commitment from an instructor/advisor they will register for the FSO and submit payment of all applicable fees. Instructors are NOT responsible for completing the course registration.
