Credit may be granted based upon:

  • Transfers
  • Exemptions
  • Substitutes
  • Certificate Credit Based on Seminar Study
  • Challenge for Credit
  • Prior Learning Assessment
    (ABA and CACE Programs only)

Transfers

Students who have completed Continuing Education courses that are used as required or elective courses in a certificate program may apply to have the courses transferred for credit into another certificate program. There is no fee to transfer Continuing Education courses to other certificate programs. Unless stipulated in a program description, there is no limit on the number of times a course may be transferred to other certificate programs. To qualify for credit:

  • The course must be an approved Continuing Education course.
  • The course must be listed as a required or elective course in the program(s) to which it is being transferred.
  • You must have achieved a grade of “C” or better (or a Pass where courses are evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis) in the course being transferred.
  • Typically the transfer course must have been completed within five (5) years of the request for transfer. For courses taken as part of a completed Certificate Program, the graduation date is viewed as the completion date.

Exemptions

An exemption credit applies when you wish to receive credit for a required or elective course based on a course not listed in that Certificate Program. To qualify as an exemption, the alternative course must be closely equivalent in its objectives, content and scheduled classroom hours to the course it will replace. The alternative course may be a Continuing Education course, offered elsewhere at the University of Manitoba, at another university, college or an approved provider of post secondary education.

With the exception of courses completed at the University of Manitoba, there is a non-refundable fee of $75 for each course exemption request. To qualify for an exemption credit:

  • A grade of "C" or better (a Pass when evaluated on Pass/Fail basis) is required in the alternative course.
  • Typically the course on which the exemption request is based must have been completed within five (5) years of the request for credit. For courses taken as part of a completed certificate/degree program, the graduation date is viewed as the completion date.
  • Equivalency must be assessed by a Continuing Education review.

Substitutes

Courses
A substitution applies when you wish to receive credit for a required or elective course in a Certificate Program based on an alternative course that teaches content related to the program's overall learning objectives, but the alternative is not equivalent to any course listed in the program. A course is accepted as a substitute credit in a particular program, based on that program's objectives. This means that a request to make the same substitution apply to another program may not be approved. Each substitution is considered on a program-by-program basis. You must contact your Program Administrator for assistance in applying for a substitution. There is a non-refundable fee of $75 for each course substitution request.

To qualify for substitute credit:

  • The alternative course must meet the learning objectives of the program.
  • The alternative course may have been completed at the University of Manitoba, another university or college, or an approved provider of post-secondary education.
  • A grade of "C" or better (a Pass when evaluated on Pass/Fail basis) is required in the alternative course.
  • Typically the course on which the substitution request is based must have been completed within five (5) years of the request for credit. For courses taken as part of a completed certificate/degree program, the graduation date is viewed as the completion date.

Seminars
(Applies to HRM and MMA Programs only)
A seminar substitution applies when you wish to receive credit for a seminar based on an alternative seminar that teaches content related to the program's overall learning objectives. A seminar is accepted as a substitute credit in a particular program, based on that program's objectives. This means that a request to make the same substitution apply to another program may not be approved. Each substitution is considered on a program-by-program basis. There is a non-refundable fee of $75 for each day of seminar substitution requested.

To qualify for substitute credit:

  • The alternative seminar must meet the learning objectives of the program.
  • The alternative seminar may have been completed at the University of Manitoba, another university or college, or an approved provider of post-secondary education.
  • The alternative seminar must have a minimum 6 contact learning hours.
  • Typically, the seminar on which the substitution request is based must have been completed while in the certificate program.
  • Proof of attendance must be provided.

Contact the Program Administrator for assistance in applying for seminar substitution

Certificate Credit Based on Seminar Study

Credit Based on Seminar Study applies when you are seeking credit for short courses and seminars in which there are no substantive, graded assignments (e.g., exams, papers, projects). Currently, this option applies only to the following programs:

  • Adult and Continuing Education
  • Applied Counselling

Each request for seminar credit is evaluated and credit awarded in multiples of 5 credit hours. A maximum of 40 credit hours based on seminar credit is permitted.

You must submit a letter to your Program Administrator requesting preliminary approval for seminar credit before the seminar start date. In order to receive credit you will be required to complete a written assignement based on the seminar content and additional readings. Details on the paper and readings are provided by the Program Administrator. Contact your Program Administrator for complete information on the assignment.

There is a non-refundable fee for each requested credit based on seminar study: $125 for each request up to 20 credit hours and $200 for each request over 20 credit hours.

Challenge for Credit

"Challenge for Credit” provides students with a means of obtaining academic credit in the University, not otherwise obtainable as a transfer of credit, for practical training and experience, and/or reading and study, previously completed. Students who have requested a challenge for credit normally do not attend classes. Courses that have been previously taken at the University of Manitoba do qualify for challenge for credit.

To challenge a course for credit, students must provide a written request to the Continuing Education (CE) Administrative Offices. Challenge for credit is conditional upon a 100% final examination for each course that is being challenged. The ability to challenge a course for credit is dependent upon CE’s ability to locate an instructor who is available to prepare and mark the challenge for credit examination.

Not all courses will qualify for challenge for credit. To determine challenge for credit eligibility, please contact an Administrative Team Member for the certificate program in which you are seeking credit. Contact information can be found in the CE Course guide or on our website at http://www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/con_ed/mpcp/ (select program/certificate & diploma/choose program name/view contact information under “For more information”).

If students fail a challenge for credit exam, or are not satisfied with their mark, they must submit a written request to the CE Administrative Offices, that the mark not be included in their student records. Students will not be able to challenge for credit the same course, at a later date.

For students who can commute to campus, the examination will be invigilated by CE staff at the Extended Education Offices, Fort Garry Campus, 188 Extended Education Complex, at a time that is agreed upon by the student and CE Administrative Offices. Students who cannot commute to campus and must write the exam at a local site must assume responsibility for coordination of the examination invigilation in accordance with the guidelines as set forth by CE (see Continuing Education Off-Campus Examination Invigilation Policy).

When challenging a course for credit, students will be assessed one half (1/2) the normal tuition for the course and all required fees including a non-refundable administration fee of $60. In cases where the student is seeking entry/admission into the program, a Program Application fee of $50 for Canadian residents and $75 for international students is payable and is non-refundable.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
(Applies to ABA and CACE Programs only)

Prior Learning Assessment is a process to evaluate and accredit relevant learning gained outside an institution by assessing it against the learning required in the institution’s courses and programs. The process enables students to obtain recognition for equivalent learning gained through work and other life experiences such as independent study, cultural and artistic pursuits, volunteer and community activities or political action.

To be eligible for credit, learning must be both relevant to the content of the Program and be at a university level. Submission of evidence of verifiable learning is required. The PLA option must be considered at the start of the Program.

The assessment fee is $350-$400 depending on the program. The evaluation process usually takes 6 to 8 weeks.

For more information regarding Prior Learning Assessment, please contact the Program Administrator.
