Certificate Credit for Seminar Study is an option for students to gain credit by taking a course, seminar, workshop or conference, other than one offered within the CACE Program.

The purpose of the seminar credit is to add NEW learning that will supplement the knowledge gained in the CACE Program.

Criteria for approval of the seminar for credit

For your seminar or other learning events to be approved for credit in the CACE program it must:

  1. Relate to the overall goals of the CACE Program.
  2. Be approved by the CACE Administrator before the start of the seminar.
  3. Offer new learning that will not be duplicated in the CACE Program.
  4. Be offered by a recognized educational institution OR by an organization that has education and training as its secondary goals.
  5. Be within 5 to 20 actual contact hours. Requests for more than 20 hours will be considered on an individual basis.
  6. Not exceed a total of 40 credit (actual) hours for all of your seminar requests.

What you need to do to obtain credit

Before the Seminars:

Apply in writing to receive approval to apply for seminar credit before the start of the seminar. Include the following information:

  1. Title of the seminar or learning event.
  2. Instructor/facilitator information.
  3. Name of sponsoring institution and brochure or advertising copy with the seminar description.
  4. Number of learning hours not counting lunch breaks.
  5. A statement of your expected learning outcomes, i.e. what learning do you hope to gain from this event?
After the seminar:
  1. Pay fee (For a seminar of 20 hours or less: $125; for a seminar of 21-40 hours: $200)
  2. Within 2 weeks of attending the seminar, submit an assignment relating the learning you gained to your CACE Program learning. See below for assignment.
  3. Attach confirmation of your attendance (not just confirmation of registration).

Your seminar study assignment

Seminar of 20 Hours or Less:

If the seminar/workshop you wish to attend is 20 hours or less , you will be required to write a paper of 5 - 10 pages with two references and pay a fee of $125.

Seminar of 21 to 40 Hours:

If the seminar/workshop you wish to attend is over 20 hours , you will be required to write a paper of 10 to 20 pages with 5 references and pay a fee of $200.

Address each of the following in your paper.

  • Explain how your previously stated expected learning outcomes were met.
  • Explain unexpected learning outcomes you gained from the seminar.
  • Discuss the main concepts.
  • Relate these concepts to your learning in the CACE program and to the principles of adult education.
  • How did this new learning increase your knowledge of adult education?
  • How are you going to apply your new learning to your work?   Discuss any limitations or barriers you might encounter.
  • How would you expand on the seminar learning with future workshops or courses?   If you do not think you would, why not?

Don't forget to add your references at the end of the paper.   Add a page with references as illustrated below (APA Style).

Site Name, Section.   Author if applicable.   Date of reference. WWW.(address)

When you paraphrase references in your paper, state author's last names(s), date and pages in brackets following the referenced material.

Direct quotes are in quotation marks except long block quotations are indented.

Note:

Marking

An instructor will mark your paper and give you a grade of Pass or Fail. Your paper will be returned to you with the instructor's comments.   The grade will be entered on your student record.

Total Seminars Allowed

You may apply for more than one seminar credit up to a total of 40 hours.
