Certificate in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

Frequently Asked Questions

I completed Behaviour Modification Principles in 1994. Can I still apply this course to the program requirements?

There is no time limit for courses completed at the University of Manitoba. If you completed a course at another University, normally the course must be completed within 10 years of the date when you apply to the certificate program.

You must complete Behaviour Modification Applications (PSYC 2450) within two years of registering in Practicum in Applied Behaviour Analysis I, and you must register in Practicum in Applied Behaviour Analysis II within two years of completing the level I practicum course.

I completed courses at another university that I think should be accepted to meet one or more of the course requirements. What do I do?

If you are not currently admitted to a faculty, you can apply for admission to the University of Manitoba through General Studies in Extended Education.

The decision to accept your courses for credit is made by the Department of Psychology and the Faculty of Arts. The program administrator will advise you on how to apply to the Faculty of Arts for transfer credit.

What if I received a C in a required course?

You must repeat the course or receive a recommendation from a faculty member in the Department of Psychology who teaches courses in behavior modification. The Program Administrator in Extended Education will direct you to the faculty member who can review your case.

How long will it take me to complete the Certificate?

The courses and practicum courses can be completed in 18 months. Normally, students will complete the program in two or three years. You have five years from the date when your application is approved to complete the program.

When are the practicum courses held?

Practicum courses begin in September and January. Students should expect to work at a facility approximately three days per week for a total of seven hours per week. Depending on the facility for Practicum II, supervised sessions may be held three times per week with one session held on Saturday.

Am I assured of a Practicum placement when I am ready to take the Practicum in ABA II?

There must be a minimum of six students registered for a practicum course for it to be held. Practicum placements may be limited. You must contact the ABA Program Administrator when you start Practicum in ABA I, to discuss possible placement.

Are there additional requirements for the Practicum in ABA II?

Yes. You are required to have a Criminal Record Search Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Consent as well as a Child Abuse Registry check. There is a $10 fee for the Child Abuse Registry check and the fee for the Criminal Record Search Certificate is $32.50.

In addition, you may be required to attend an orientation session at the facility prior to beginning the practicum course. As those requirements may take up to three weeks to be completed, we urge you to register for the Certificate Program in Applied Behaviour Analysis in advance of course start dates. The Program Administrator can provide you with the dates of the orientation, forms and procedures.

Where will the Practicum in ABA II course be held?

At the moment the practicum sites are in Winnipeg, MB. St. Amant is one current site for Practicum II. The sites are to be determined by the needs of the students and the availability of supervisors. We are open to the possibility of holding the Practicum II course outside of Winnpeg, provided the site meets our criteria. Please contact the Program Administrator to get more information regarding criteria if you have a location in mind for a placement outside of Winnpeg.
