Is it possible to have courses or work I’ve completed outside the HRM Program recognized for credit?

Relevant learning you have gained outside of the HRM Program may be eligible for credit towards the certificate to a maximum of 144 hours of credit.

Recognition of prior learning may occur in several ways:

  • Exemptions/Transfer of Credit
Exemptions may be granted against HRM courses for equivalent courses successfully completed and evaluated at recognized institutions. There is a $75 non-refundable fee for each exemption request for courses taken outside of the University of Manitoba.

You may also apply for transfer credits to the HRM Program at no fee for relevant courses completed in other certificate programs offered by Continuing Education at the University of Manitoba. For exemption or transfer please submit a Certificate Course Credit Request Form.
  • Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
Prior Learning Assessment is a process to evaluate and accredit relevant learning gained outside an institution by assessing it against the learning required in the institution’s courses and programs.

The process enables students to obtain recognition for learning via work and other life experiences such as independent study, cultural and artistic pursuits, volunteer and community activities or political action.

Recognition of prior learning for credit in the HRM Program may be obtained by submission of evidence of verifiable learning. To be eligible for credit in HRM, learning must be both relevant to the content of the HRM Program and be at a university level. The PLA assessment fee is $365. We advise you to consider the PLA option at the start of the program.

To discuss your eligibility for PLA, please contact:
    Irene Golembioski

Please contact the Program Administrator for details, as preliminary approval for seminar credit must be arranged in advance of the seminar.

A statement of learning out comes, proof of attendance and written assignment are required. The administrative fee for seminar credit is $75 for each six hour seminar transfer request.

How long does it take to complete the Program?

Most participants complete the program within two or three years; the maximum time for completion is six years from initial application to the program.

How are HRM courses delivered to students? e.g. face-to-face, distance delivery?

We offer a variety of ways for our learners to take our courses. Select formats according to your interest and convenience. Types of formats available will vary with courses and programs.

  • Face-to-Face: In this format classes meet in the evening and/or daytime. Depending on the course and program, this format may vary from one evening a week over a period of weeks to condensed courses held over a few days or weeks; workshops are typically held weekdays and/or weekend days.
  • Blended Learning: This format combines face-to-face classes and online participation. The online component may include regular online discussion groups with your classmates and instructor.
  • Distance Delivery: The course manual, assignment due dates, etc. are gradually being
posted online. You may be required to purchase some materials such as textbooks through the U of M BookStore. You submit assignments usually by email through the course website. An instructor grades them and returns them to you with feedback. You may also be expected to participate online in group discussions; instructors may post extra course material online, assignments can be submitted online, you can chat with course participants, etc.
  • Online: In online courses, you will access a course website to read course material, participate in discussions, submit assignments, and check your assignment grades. Interaction via e-mail, chat, or discussion groups is easily available, and facilitates
communication amongst classmates and between you and your instructor. Since course materials are placed on the website, you will not receive a course package in the mail.
  • Course Websites: Most of the course formats above use a Learning Management System (LMS) to augment the course, e.g., post material, such as course outlines and PowerPoint presentations, or to conduct online discussions, etc. The University of Manitoba has been using WebCT as their LMS. However, this will change as of fall 2008. To access the course website via a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, we issue a password and ID. For more information on the Learning Management System (LMS) used for University of Manitoba course websites, go to umanitoba.ca/webct
