Hundreds of individuals from all over the world have successfully completed the Quality Management Certificate Program since it was first offered in 1978. The program is endorsed by the Manitoba Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and is periodically reviewed by an Advisory Committee consisting of representatives from industry, government, ASQ and the University of Manitoba, to ensure the course material is appropriate and up-to-date. Our students represent many sectors including: manufacturing, service, non-profit, government, healthcare, education, professional and small business. Any organization, large or small, can benefit from a general understanding of the principles of quality.
This program provides individuals from private industry, government, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, consulting firms and other areas, who are interested in implementing or managing quality programs, with knowledge and skills necessary to be effective managers in the field of quality.
The program consists of two 36 hour courses which may be taken in any order and can be completed within a single academic year online.
You have the option of starting with either course, but if you are new to the subject of quality management, we suggest you begin with Quality Assurance Planning. Courses are available online (students work independently with guidance from the Instructor). The online course manuals, one for each course, will guide you through the curriculum. Material in the course modules is meant to supplement the text and assigned readings. They include review/self test questions and exercises to help you apply the concepts and gauge your progress.

Our instructors are well-recognized professionals in the field and try to integrate your experiences into the program. The exam is completed online. One text is used for both courses: Evans, James R. and William M. Lindsay, Managing for Quality and Performance Excellence, 9th ed., 2011, Thomson South-Western Publishing Co. This excellent reference book may be purchased from the University Bookstore. A Textbook Order Form will be available on the course website.
The tuition fee for each course (in Canadian funds) is $599 for students residing in Canada or the U.S.A. Tuition for students from other countries is $725 per course. Tuition fees are tax exempt. You will also require one textbook, used for both courses. You can access an official tuition receipt for income tax purposes from the University of Manitoba through the Student Access Site. This certificate is only available through online delivery.
There are no academic prerequisites to enter this program. However, if you have not used basic mathematics or statistics for some time, we recommend you refresh your skills by reviewing any introductory math or statistics text before starting. All course material is printed in English. Students whose first language is not English may be required to attain a TOEFL score of 550 or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL in accordance with University requirements.
Written notice must be received within five weeks after the start date of the course to claim a refund. An administrative fee of $60 will be deducted for courses offered online.
If you withdraw after the refund deadline, written notice must be received by Student Registration and Records no later than five working days before the course end date. Failure to do so will result in a final grade being calculated based on course work completed. Even if you are not eligible for a refund, if you are unable to complete a course you are advised to withdraw in writing before the end of the course to avoid an “F” grade on your student record.
