Most students at the University of Manitoba complete the first year of their degrees in University 1 where they create a personalized program from a wide variety of courses in Arts, Science and other faculties and schools. University 1 offers the “Freedom to Choose” allowing students to take the specific courses required for admission to one or more programs while, at the same time, making it possible to sample courses related to different disciplines or professions. After successful completion of University 1, students apply for admission to their desired faculty or school or ‘transit’ to the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Science for further study.
University 1 is the gateway to most degree programs at the University of Manitoba. Courses completed in University 1 constitute the first year of most University of Manitoba degree programs. Students should apply to University 1 if they plan on completing a university degree and:
Refer to information on admission requirements to University 1.
If you have 24 credit hours or more of previous post-secondary study, contact Enrolment Services for advice on admission requirements to post-University 1 faculties and schools.
University 1 students choose from over 200 courses on the University 1 Course List offered by 13 faculties and schools. Some introductory level courses require the completion of specific high school courses as prerequisites. Also, university prerequisites may be required for other courses. Prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions found in the faculty or school chapters of the Undergraduate Calendar & Registration Guide and Registration Guide and in this Guide. An online version of the Undergraduate Calendar & Registration Guide and Registration Guide can be found at umanitoba.ca/calendar.

New University 1 students are required to complete a Start@U1 registration tutorial before registering for courses. Start @U1 is available beginning June 2007 via an online tutorial. The Start@U1 tutorial will teach students to choose courses, determine a course load, build a timetable and use the Aurora Student registration system (Aurora Student). Other registration related concerns, such as fee payments and photo identification cards, will also be addressed.
Start@U1 details will be mailed mid-May to all University 1 applicants for the 2007-2008 Regular Session, in the Fall to January 2008 applicants, and in the Spring to Summer Session 2008 applicants. Detailed information will also be available online at umanitoba.ca/u1.
Course selection information for University 1 students is found in the University 1 STARTbook, which is mailed to new University 1 students beginning in June.
More information about Start@U1 can be found through the “Course Registration” link on the University 1 Web site at umanitoba.ca/u1.
The STARTbook is a companion guide to the University of Manitoba’s Undergraduate Calendar & Registration Guide and Registration Guide. The STARTbook helps students make sense of the course selection process at the University of Manitoba by showing them how to choose the courses they need to meet their academic goals.
The STARTbook has an entry for each faculty and school at the University of Manitoba that provides a list of courses that correspond to a method of course selection and outlines the admission requirements. Students choose their course selection method according to their individual needs.
The Focused Approach is for students who know exactly where they want to go, and who want to finish their degrees in the shortest time possible. These “focused” students have one target program, and are prepared to study on a full-time basis. They also have all the necessary prerequisite courses coming out of high school.
The Balanced Approach is for students who are trying to decide between two or more target programs. By combining the minimum courses required in each of their target programs, and by meeting the minimum number of credit hours required by each program, students are able to create a flexible year that keeps their options open.
The Sampling Approach is for students who don’t want to commit to a specific faculty/school, and who want to explore their options. The Sampling Approach allows students to “test drive” various courses while deciding on a future target program. With few exceptions, all courses completed in University 1 are transferable to any degree program at the University of Manitoba.
An on-line version of the STARTbook can be found on the University 1 Web site at umanitoba.ca/u1.
University 1 students register for courses through Aurora Student, the University of Manitoba’s registration system. Complete instructions can be found in the Aurora Student Registration Procedures section of this Guide.
