Faculty of Social Work

The Faculty of Social Work remains committed to the accessibility of social work education. The distance delivery B.S.W. program is intended to target individuals who are employed in the social services and living outside the city of Winnipeg, but who may not have the opportunity to pursue professional social work education.

Course delivery methods include a combination of web conferences and online courses (access to high speed internet is required). Students can complete all degree requirements, including examinations, within their respective communities.

The faculty wishes to attract individuals who are strongly committed to social justice, social change, and to a professional helping role. You should have a mature outlook, relate well to people, and have good verbal and written communication skills. You should be able to think critically and must have a strong sense of personal integrity.

Admission

Applicants to the BSW Distance Delivery initiative must meet all three requirements to be admitted into the program.

  1. Successful completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours by May 1 in academic courses taken in any faculty and which are accepted to the University of Manitoba with a minimum of 2.5 (C+) A.G.P.A.
  2. Residency outside the City of Winnipeg.
  3. A minimum of one year of work experience, within the last give years, within the social services.

The deadline for submission of applications for 2013-14 has now passed.

2014-15 Admission
Please apply for the 2014-15 term in December 2013 with a deadline of March 1, 2014.  There are two parts to the application.  The application as well as the supplemental application form. 

Program Requirements

The B.S.W. degree requires completion of 123 credit hours
of course work, including:

  • 72 credit hours of required social work courses, including
    two Field Instruction courses (field practicums); and
  • 51 credit hours of elective courses, including a required
    Math elective course and a written English elective course.

Note: Admission criteria will be changing for the 2014-15 academic year and will affect students applying after March 1, 2013.
