Experience Manitoba Travel Study Adventures in Churchill, Manitoba

Churchill, Manitoba, Canada is located along the southern edge of Canada's arctic on the shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba. Churchill is at the juncture of three distinct eco-zones: arctic marine, arctic tundra and boreal forest, making it an ideal place to experience the unique wildlife and environment of the region.   It is one the best places in the world to see polar bears, the aurora borealis and beluga whales.

English Language Studies and International Programs at the University of Manitoba offer two Experience Manitoba Study Adventure Programs in Churchill, Manitoba for international students to discover a special part of northern Canada, and the world.

Belugas in the Bay Learning Vacation (July 28th to August 5th )

The Churchill River estuary is one of the summering grounds for the largest population of beluga whales in the Arctic. Nowhere else in the world can you get as up close and personal with these charming and highly vocal whales. While other beluga populations deal with the combined threats of pollution and population decline, Churchill’s whales migrate to the river to feed, give birth and moult their skin.

Students will have three opportunities to view beluga whales on the Churchill River - once by large jet boat, once by zodiac and, finally, under your own power by river kayak.

Whales are only one part of the experience. Students will also enjoy a walking tour of Prince of Wales Fort and Cape Merry National Historic Sites. Evening lectures by marine biologists and local cultural presenters help round out this truly educational experience.

The experience begins and ends with a scenic two-day train ride through the changing Manitoba landscape.
