Welcome to the Intensive English Program!
As part of the Intensive English Experience at the University of Manitoba, students can stay in homestay or residence accommodation. For students who choose the all-inclusive option, the cost of accommodation, airport pick-up, and three meals a day are included in the program fees.
How to apply for accommodation
To begin the application process, students must submit an IEP accommodation application form. IEP Accommodation Application Form
It is important that we receive your accommodation request early on in your application process in order to find the best possible accommodation for you. Please make sure to provide us with plenty of information about yourself (e.g. your personal interests, any allergies, food preferences etc.). The more we know about you, the easier it will be to find suitable accommodation for you. If the accommodation application is not received two weeks prior to the program start date, placement cannot be guaranteed. Please send the accommodation application form
by e-mailing the application to jsmart@extended.umanitoba.ca;
by faxing it to (204) 474-7660; or by mailing it to the Intensive English Program, University of Manitoba, 166 Extended Education Complex, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2.
The Intensive English Program strives to provide students with their preferred choice of accommodation. At certain times of the year, space in residence or homestay may be limited. Generally speaking, residence rooms may be limited during the regular academic year (September – April); homestay placements may be limited in the spring and summer (May – August). If a student’s preferred choice of accommodation is unavailable at the time of the request, alternative accommodation arrangements will be made. The student will be placed on a waiting list and moved to the preferred accommodation type once it becomes available.
Homestay Accommodation
Homestay Student Guidelines
Life with a homestay family in Canada is a rewarding cultural experience for international students. In fact, many of our students keep in touch with their homestay families for many years after they have returned to their home countries. Living with a homestay family provides students with an excellent opportunity to practice their English skills on a daily basis and learn about family life in Canada.
All of our homestay families are visited and approved by the program’s Accommodation Coordinator. Homes are located within 45-60 minutes or less to the University of Manitoba campus by bus.
On the day of arrival in Winnipeg, the homestay family will greet their student at the airport and bring the student to his/her new home. The student’s bedroom contains a bed, study desk, lamp, and closet. Students share the bathroom and laundry facilities, telephone and other common areas of the house with their homestay family. The homestay family provides students with 3 meals per day (breakfast, lunch and a prepared dinner).
For more information about homestay, please read the Student Homestay Guidelines.
International students stay in the same residences as regular University of Manitoba students and soon become part of the vibrant campus life at a Canadian university.
Intensive English Program students are placed in either St. John’s College or St. Andrew’s College residences.

There is limited access to university residences from September to April during regular session, so make sure to submit your accommodation application form as early as possible.
Residence rooms are usually about 150 square feet and are furnished with a bed (blankets, sheets and pillowcases are provided), desk, chair and storage space, and have common washroom, laundry and kitchen facilities. IEP students eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the residence cafeteria together with the other students in residence. Depending on the location of the residence, students may have to walk approximately 10 to 15 minutes to class.
To ensure that a student’s accommodation experience is successful and rewarding, it is important to read the following guidelines:
Accommodation Fees
Accommodation fees for both homestay and residence are included in the all-inclusive tuition fees of the Intensive English Program.
The fees also include three meals per day and airport pick-up upon arrival.

Arrival and Departure
Students must provide their arrival information (date and time of arrival, airline and flight number) to the Accommodations Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the official start date.
Arrangements will be made for the student to be picked up at the Winnipeg airport by an IEP staff member or the homestay family.
Students are expected to arrive and leave their accommodation on the scheduled arrival and departure dates set out by the Intensive English Program.
Students in residence cannot occupy the residence room before the scheduled arrival date, and must depart their room by 12:00 p.m. noon on the scheduled departure date.
If a student arrives prior to the scheduled arrival date, IEP will do its best to find accommodation, but cannot guarantee early placement. The student may have to find his/her own accommodation until the official program start date. Suitable hotel accommodation can be found in close proximity to the University of Manitoba campus. Options include:
Accommodation Changes
Staying in residence or with a homestay family provides a unique cultural experience, but also requires you to be open to new customs and traditions. Please understand that it may take some time for you to adjust to life in Canada.
If students have questions or concerns about their accommodation, it is important that these are communicated early on. Students will have the opportunity to complete a homestay or residence evaluation form two weeks after the start of their placement.
If students would like to change their accommodation, they must meet with the Accommodation Coordinator.
Students who choose to leave their accommodation early, will not receive a refund.
