The Faculty’s tobacco-use cessation program is based on the critical components of effective tobacco-use cessation programs and was initiated in the fall of 1998 (Fiore MC, Bailey WC, Cohen SJ, et al. Smoking cessation: clinical practice guideline, No. 18. AHCPR Publ. No. 96-0692. Rockville, MD: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, PHS, Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, 1996).
The Faculty’s program incorporates tobacco-use cessation training into the dental II and dental hygiene I curricula; provides a systematic tobacco-use cessation clinic protocol for the teaching clinics which is ‘the standard of care’; provides a list of community referral programs/counselors/psychologists for patients ready to quit; acts as a resource centre for educational and self-help cessation materials to students, staff and community practitioners and assists students/practitioners in the implementation of tobacco-use cessation programs in the dental office.
