M. Dent - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Master of Dentistry in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery which is four years in length includes a four-year hospital residency for which a Post-Graduate Training Certificate is awarded. The program has full accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. The primary objective of the program is to train dentists to become competent, ethical Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons for practice in Canada, and to provide them with a scientifically based curriculum which will prepare them for the challenges they will face in the development of their speciality, throughout their professional careers.
The clinical program provides comprehensive training in all the major areas generally included within the scope of practice of an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Students are provided with opportunities to attend and present papers at National and International conferences related to aspects of their speciality and an external elective rotation is permitted subject to approval of the Program Director.
General Program Information:
The program commences on July 1st and is forty-eight months (48) in length, including vacations and public holidays. Residents are required to complete a project and publish in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Some support may be granted to allow travel to national or international specialty meetings and courses. Residents receive a stipend including benefits in accordance with the current collective agreement. The Master’s degree is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all program requirements as set out in the University of Manitoba's current calendar. A certificate of hospital residency training is also awarded.

Clinical Requirements:
The program provides a progressive training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including graduate-level courses in applied basic sciences and clinical rotations in the Health Sciences Centre in the Departments of:
• Anaesthesia • Otolaryngyology
• Internal Medicine • Surgical Oncology
• Head and Neck Surgery • Critical Intensive Care
• Emergency Room Medicine • Plastic Surgery
• Otolaryngology • Electives possible
Research Project:
Residents are required to write an essay or carry out a research project and publish in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Research interests of members of the Section of Oral Surgery include:
• Temporomandibular Joint Disease
• Oral Cancer
• Clinical Trials Of Dental Implants
• Orthognathic Surgery
• Cleft Palate Surgery
• Maxillofacial Trauma
Essay/Research Project to be completed and presented in fourth year. Additional courses may be assigned in support of the Essay/Research Project.
Research interests:
Faculty members supervise every student in at least one research project during the training period and their interests provide for a wide spectrum of clinically related topics. Collaborative research with other departments is encouraged and does occur. Some examples of areas in which faculty have published and have a continuing interest are:

Admission Requirements:
Applications will be considered from qualified persons who:
• Are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada;
• Are in possession of a dental qualification which makes them eligible for licensure in a province of Canada;
• Hold a National Dental Examining Board of Canada certificate;
• Comply with provincial requirements for licensing of Dental interns and residents;
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) certificate
Note:
Applicants must attain a score of at least 550; IELTS applicants must obtain a score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 on the written component will also be accepted.
A successfully completed English language proficiency test is mandatory of all applicants; unless a high school diploma or university degree was attained from Canada or one of the countries listed on the English language proficiency test exemption list available here:
