Program Requirements and Course DescriptionsThe School of Dental Hygiene requires 99 credit hours to be competed for the Dental Hygiene Diploma in Dental Hygiene. Following 30 credit hours of professional studies, the professional program is delivered over 2 academic years. The theoretical portion of the program occurs in both years; however, more emphasis is placed on the clinical aspects of the program in the second year.

8 Competencies of U of M Dental Hygiene Graduates

The School of Dental Hygiene is a competency-based program, where progression of specific knowledge and skills is learner/participant-centered.

The 8 Dental Hygiene competencies were created by the Faculty as an accreditation requirement of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. Therefore, on completion of the Dental Hygiene Diploma, students will be able to perform to a specific standard. In order to graduate, students must be competent in all of the following:

The Competencies are organized into “Core Abilities” and “Dental Hygiene Services”.


Core Abilities:

A. Practice as a professional abiding by the code of ethics, committed to competence, integrity, altruism, advancement of the profession and the promotion of the public good.

B. Communicate effectively and collaboratively during professional interactions.

C. Use critical thinking strategies to make evidence-based decisions in all aspects of dental hygiene practice.

D. Serve as an advocate for individuals and/or groups.

E. Coordinate complex undertakings involving numerous individuals, bringing their contributions together to support client needs and outcomes

Dental Hygiene Services:

F. Provide clinical therapy reflecting primary, interceptive, therapeutic, preventive and ongoing care procedures that help to enable people to achieve optimal oral health that contributes to overall health.

G. Serve as an oral health educator applying teaching and learning principles to facilitate client development of attitudes, knowledge, skills and behaviours with particular emphasis on oral health and its relationship to overall health.

H. Serve as health promoters enabling people to increase control over and improve their health and take actions towards changing social, environmental and economic conditions that impact public and individual health.

Outstanding performance in
National Board Standards

The "Drive for Top Five" remains strong and alive as the 2010 - 11 Dental Hygiene students outperformed  the national average within every category in the recent national board scores.  Another fine example of the quality of faculty, students, staff and educational programs at the University of Manitoba.
