Master of Science - Pediatric Dentistry

The University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry is inviting candidates to apply to the pediatric dentistry graduate program. The graduate program in pediatric dentistry is a 36-month program leading to a Masters degree. The deadline for submission of a completed application is October 1, 2013. Interviews for short-listed applicants will be held in October 2013.


Please note:

Application for provisional accreditation has been submitted, however the program is not yet accredited; this is an ongoing process and no guarantees can be made regarding when full accreditation status will be attained.

There is normally an intake of two residents each year.

The program involves university coursework in aboriginal and rural cultures and communities as well as an intensive research program in prevention and community dentistry.

The entire third year of the program involves placement and research in rural and remote areas.


Program Description

This unique program will provide an opportunity for dentists to pursue higher education and research in the field of Pediatric Dentistry with an emphasis on prevention and public health in underserved and disadvantaged communities (Aboriginal, rural, and urban poor).

This masters program will provide eligibility to take the examinations of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD).

During the first two years, patient care will be provided in a modern 5-chair pediatric dentistry graduate clinic with state-of-the-art computerized diagnostic equipment. Graduate residents will also have the opportunity to treat pediatric dental patients in the hospital setting and in local community outreach clinics.

The entire third year of the program involves placement and research in rural and remote areas.

The strength of the clinical program is the wide range of diversity in instructor philosophies of treatment and the opportunity to learn several techniques such as:

  • Management of the pediatric dental patient
  • Pharmacological management techniques
  • Treatment of medically compromised patients and patients with special health care needs
  • Emergency pediatric dental care
  • Craniofacial growth and development
  • Preventive and community pediatric dentistry
  • Providing care in disadvantaged and underserved communities
  • Graduate residents' responsibilities include:
  • Preparation of a Master's Thesis and oral defense of the research project
  • Presentation of the research at an international forum
  • Submission of an article for publication based on the research
  • Limited teaching in the undergraduate pediatric dentistry clinic
  • Participation in outreach to under-served communities

Tuition:

Canadian residents/citizens will be assessed an initial tuition fee of $17,000 subject to annual increases as per university guidelines. International students will be assessed a tuition differential to be determined (this differential is usually approximately double the Canadian residents/citizen tuition).

Stipend:

Residents will receive an initial is the on call Honorarium in first year and the stipend of $22,000 in second and third year subject to annual increases per university guidelines.


Admission Requirements:

  • DMD/DDS degree or its equivalent
  • At least one year of general practice or hospital residency
  • TOEFL test for foreign applicants who do not have English as their first language (the TOEFL score cannot be older than 2 years)
  • Deadline for applications is October 1, 2013

Note: Applicants selected for interview must demonstrate a sincere and genuine interest in practice careers emphasizing prevention and wellness in rural and underserved areas

  2. A biographical sketch of one or two pages discussing educational and career objectives, personal experiences, and other factors that have had or will have an impact on these objectives
  3. A minimum of two letters of reference with corresponding reference forms including a typewritten sheet listing the names and full addresses, telephone, fax and e-mail numbers of each referee
  4. Official transcripts, sent directly from the institution, are required from ALL recognized post-secondary institutions, regardless of whether a degree has been awarded
  5. Curriculum vitae
  6. Faculty of Graduate Studies requires $100 processing fee (non-refundable): Along with your application, please enclose a cheque or money order made payable to the University of Manitoba (only cheques/money orders that are in Canadian funds will be accepted - please see further information which is attached to the application form)
