Internationally Educated Teachers (IETs)

NEW Internationally Educated Teachers Programming

If you are an internationally educated teacher (IET) who would like to be able to teach in Manitoba and would like to take the courses required at the University of Manitoba, you have come to the right place!

Note that the previous cohort-based program for internationally educated teachers has been discontinued.

If you are an internationally education teacher (IET) who would like to be able to teach in Manitoba then your first step is to contact Manitoba Professional Certification Branch for an assessment of your credentials.

All IETs who need to take additional education coursework for professional certification in Manitoba should apply to the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (PBDE) program.

The PBDE program is a 30 credit hour advance practice program designed for experienced teachers and administrators. Students in the PBDE program (including IETs) must take a minimum of 12 credit hours of course work at the 5000 level and may take a maximum of 18 credit hours of course work below the 5000 level. Interested applicants will see this reflected in the recommended coursework.

Recommended Course Work (to be taken in the sequence listed below):

  1. EDUA 2810School & Society 2 (3 credit hours)
A course that focuses on understanding the legal and administrative foundations of education in Manitoba’s K-12 schools.

  2. EDUB XXXX – A curriculum course in one of your teachable areas at either the 1000, 2000 or 5000 level. (3 credit hours)
IETs need an understanding of Manitoba curriculum in order to be able to function effectively in Manitoba classrooms. As a result, you are encouraged to choose which curriculum course is most appropriate given your background, your interest, and course availability. We recommend that you complete at least one course in curriculum before registering for the first practicum course.

Please note that an application for a practicum placement should be made through the School Experiences Office.

  3. EDUA 1500 or EDUB 1602 Aboriginal Education or Aboriginal Perspectives and the Curriculum  (3 credit hours)
These courses focus on understanding the role that Aboriginal people have played in the history of Manitoba and Canada and/or ways in which Aboriginal perspectives can be integrated across the curriculum. Both are priorities in the Manitoba school system.

  4. One 5000 level course based on your needs, interest, and course availability. (3 credit hours)

  5. EDUB 5220 Recent Developments in Curriculum, Teaching & Learning: IET Practicum 1 (3 credit hours).
A practicum experience in Manitoba schools is important for understanding the Manitoba school context and for developing professional connections that are often necessary for securing employment. This course is offered in a full-time block of six weeks and will be completed under the supervision of a mentor teacher and a faculty advisor who are committed to IETs.

Please note that a practicum placement form needs to be completed before a practicum can be arranged. This form is available from the School Experiences Office in the Faculty of Education. Up to date criminal records and child abuse registry checks must also be submitted before a practicum will be arranged. For more information email seodept@cc.umanitoba.ca.

  6. EDUA 2800 Inclusive Special Education  (3 credit hours)
This is a course that focuses on an understanding of the inclusive nature of Manitoba schools and how to support students with special needs. This course has also been approved to meet the first 3 credit hours of the Minister of Education’s Diversity requirement.

  7. EDUA 1540 Cross-Cultural Education, EDUB 1620 Principles and Procedures of Second Language Teaching, EDUB 1820 Language and Content Instruction of ESL/Bilingual Students or EDUB 1830 La pédagogie du Français de base aux niveaux Intermédiaire et de la Jeune enfance (3 credit hours).
These 4 courses have been approved to meet the second 3 credit hours of the Minister of Education’s Diversity requirement. You will need to take only one of the above or a similar 5000 level course with the approval of the Associate Dean.

  8. EDUB XXXX – A second curriculum course in one of your teachable areas at either the 1000, 2000 or 5000 level. (3 credit hours).
IETs need an understanding of Manitoba curriculum in order to be able to function effectively in a Manitoba classroom. You are encouraged  to choose a curriculum course that you think is most appropriate given your background, your interest, and course availability. We recommend that you complete both curriculum courses (3 + 3 = 6 credit hours) before you begin your second practicum course.

  9. A second  5000 level course based on your needs, interest, and course availability (3 credit hours)

  10. EDUB 5230 Recent Developments in Curriculum, Teaching & Learning: IET Practicum 2 (3 credit hours).
