I am interested in understanding Char biodiversity in the Canadian Arctic via elements and isotopes in otoliths (earbones). Migration histories and stock discrimination for Arctic Char and Dolly Varden are poorly understood in the present day. I am examining migration deomographics in Arctic Char over the extent of their range (North Ellesmere to southern Quebec) to understand if large scale environmental trends can help predict age of migration or if smaller scale geographic patterns better predict migration capabilities for the populations. As well, I am using otoliths to discriminate between Dolly Varden stocks on the Yukon North Slope. This will provide unique river signatures within Dolly Varden that can then be used to determine stock of origin in the mixed-stock coastal fisheries that occur annually when Dolly Varden feed at sea in the summer months.
