Dr. Scharien studies sea ice properties and processes related to decay, as well as the development of techniques for remote sea ice geophysical information retrieval, such as SAR. He is interested in the causes and implications of rapid change in summer Arctic sea ice extent and volume, including its impacts on physical, chemical, biological, and human components of the Arctic system.
