Research
The principal research field of Dr. Jens Ehn is sea-ice geophysics. In particular, he is interested in processes and feedbacks that control solar radiation interactions in the Arctic marine and sea-ice environment in order to improve our ability to predict the impacts caused by a changing Arctic climate. His current research utilizes both field observations and modeling to understand:
- Ocean/sea-ice/atmosphere interactions, sea-ice formation, melt and thermodynamics.
- Biogeophysics of Arctic sea-ice environments affecting light propagation, light-matter interactions, and particle dynamics.
- How optical methods can be used to infer physical, biological and chemical properties in ice and water.
- Solar radiation partitioning in highly variegated melting sea-ice covers (mixture of open water, melt ponds, high-scattering mounds and ridges) and associated impacts on the ice melt progression, water column stability, and timing and magnitude of biological production.
