Human Ecology Awards and Scholarships Supplemental Application

Faculty of Human Ecology Scholarships and Awards

A number of scholarships and awards are granted to Human Ecology students each year at the end of second term. YOU could be one of the recipients, and NOW is the time to begin preparing yourself to meet the qualifications for these awards. Below is a listing of the awards you may qualify for if you are:

NOTE: At the end of the academic year, all students will automatically be considered for the majority of the awards and scholarships offered through the Faculty of Human Ecology, based on their academic standing and the terms of the award. It is only necessary for students to apply for those awards where it specifically states below "application required". Approximate amounts for each award are available through the Financial Aid and Awards Office.

A Student Entering a Graduate Program

HOLMFRIDUR KRISTJANSSON GRADUATE AWARD IN NUTRITION -Graduate student in M.Sc. or Ph.D. program in nutrition.

MANITOBA FAMILY YEAR 1994 LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP - Full-time M.Sc. student in Family Social Sciences.

JANET FABRO McCOMB AWARD- Communication and leadership abilities of a full time Family Social Sciences M. Sc. student.

DR. BRUCE McDONALD AWARD IN CLINICAL DIETETICS - Highest academic standing and accepted into Applied Clinical Nutrition.

KATHERINE M.S. MIDDLETON - Graduate student working on a research program focusing on food product development.

ELIZABETH B. SMITH AWARD - Highest grade point average among those proceeding to graduate work in the area of nutrition (emphasis on community nutrition).

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN HUMAN ECOLOGY - Academic excellence and professional potential for a student who enters the Master's year in Textile Sciences.

DR. MARION VAISEY-GENSER GRADUATE AWARD - Presentation of research at a conference.

GARSON N. VOGEL MEMORIAL AWARD - To a student in the Ph.D. program in Food and Nutritional Sciences.

 

FACULTY OF HUMAN ECOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD - Awarded to Graduate Students who submit and present papers at conferences. Application Required


A Graduating Student

HELEN BROUGHTON PRIZE - High standing in the Human Nutritional Sciences Major, with a preference to students concentrating in the foods area.

DR. VIVIAN BRUCE SCHOLARSHIP - Highest grade point average over the 4 years of the program in the Human Ecology Major.

SHIRLEY JOY HECHTER MEMORIAL AWARD - Excellence in academic studies and personal qualities.

HUMAN ECOLOGY MEDAL OF MERIT - Outstanding academic record, personal qualities and faculty participation.

HUMAN ECOLOGY PROGRAM MEDALS - One medal is offered to a graduating student in each degree program (Human Ecology Program, Textile Sciences, Family Social Sciences, Human Nutritional Sciences, Health Sciences and Health Studies) who has achieved the highest G.P.A. for the best 60 credit hours completed in the last two calendar years of the degree program.

ELIZABETH LEWIS ROSE MEMORIAL AWARD - Highest academic standing in the Human Nutritional Sciences Major. (Book Prize)

UNIVERSITY GOLD MEDAL - Highest cumulative grade point average over the entire program. Must be registered for 30 credit hours in the final year.

NORMA E. WALKER AWARD - Outstanding professional potential and personal qualities in a student in the Child and Adolescent Development Option who has completed at least 54 credit hours.

MARGARET I. MORTON PRIZE - Highest GPA in all core courses taught in the Faculty of Human Ecology with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Graduating student or completion of at least 84 credit hours.

LOCKHART AWARD FOR FAMILY SOCIAL SCIENCES - Awarded to a student who has completed Family Social Sciences program, has achieved a minimum DGPA of 3.0, and has demonstrated the potential to be a strong leader through involvement in the Faculty of Human Ecology and/or volunteer work in the community.  Preference given to students with strong social obligations. DROTHY M. BOLTON AWARD - A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0, active in student activities, completion of 84 credit hours and registers in the next ensuing academic year. [*Application required*, deadline April 30]

BETTY MORTON CHRISTIAN SCHOLARSHIP - High standing in at least 54 credit hours of Child adn Adolescent Development Option.

DR. E. FENIAK SCHOLARSHIP - Completion of at least 84 credit hours in the Human Ecology or Human Ecology/Education programs. Part-time students are eligible. Student must register in the next year of their program.

GOLDIE GOLDSTEIN PRIZE IN NUTRITION - High academic standing and greatest improvement in Vitamins and Minerals in Health HNSC 3300 or Nutrition and the Elderly HNSC 4310.

CECILIA A. GONZALES SCHOLARSHIP - Completion of 84 credit hours in Textile Sciences proceeding to next ensuing academic year with the highest sessional GPA for the current academic year.

HUMAN ECOLOGY 75TH ANNIVERSARY SCHOLARSHIP - High standing in at least 84 credit hours of Human Ecology and proceeds in next ensuing academic year.

MANITOBA PORK COUNCIL PRIZE - Highest combined GPA in HNSC 2130/HNSC 2150, and HNSC 2160.

E. ELIZABETH SHANNON AWARD - Completion of 84 credit hours in Textile Sciences with a minimum 3.5 GPA, shows professional promise and proceeds to next ensuing academic year.

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN HUMAN ECOLOGY - Academic excellence and professional potential for a student who has completed 54 credit hours or 84 credits in Textile Sciences.

GEORGE WESTON SCHOLARSHIP - High standing in Human Nutritional Sciences, community involvement and communication skills. [Click here for the Financial Aid and Awards Office]

JUDY STOREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Awarded to a full-time student in the final year of the Human Nutritional Sciences program, who has been accepted into the Food Industry Option practicum, with high standing and demonstrated leadership. [*Application Required*, Deadline April 30]

HELEN FOWLER BROUGHTON SCHOLARSHIP - Highest standing in the Foods option in Human Nutritional Sciences.

MANITOBA EGG PRODUCERS' MARKETING BOARD SCHOLARSHIP - A minimum sessional grade point average of 3.0 in a Human Nutritional Sciences or Human Ecology Program student who has completed 84 credit hours. Priority given to a Human Nutritional Sciences student.

DEAN RUTH E. BERRY - MANITOBA ASSOCIATION OF HOME ECONOMISTS AWARD - Highest standing in Human Ecology following completion of 54 credit hours. [*Application Required*, Deadline April 30]

RUSSELL FOOD EQUIPMENT AWARD - High academic standing in a Human Nutritional Sciences student who has completed 84 credit hours. Must be concentrating in the Dietetics area and have spent at least one summer working in an approved food service or dietary department.

MILDRED SIMMONS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Completion of at least 54 credit hours in Human Ecology with high standing and proceeding to next ensuing undergraduate year.

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN HUMAN ECOLOGY - Academic excellence and professional potential for a student who has completed 54 credit hours or 84 credits in Textile Sciences.

Year Unspecified

MICHELLE CLOUTIER MEMORIAL AWARD FOR STUDENT INVOLVEMENT - Completion of 24 credit hours and proceeds in next ensuing academic year. Student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and has been involved in student affairs. [*Application required*, deadline April 30.]

ROMA COLLINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Completion of 84 credit hours with high academic standing, demonstrated leadership qualities on Student Council, and has shown consideration for other students.

DR. A.W. HOGG UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - One award to the top undergraduate student irrespective of year or major. Must be registered in 30 credit hours.

ISBISTER UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - Awarded to the top undergraduate student irrespective of year or major. Must be registered in 30 credit hours with a minimum of 3.00 GPA.

LARA ONALEE NAGLER MEMORIAL AWARD - "LARA'S LEGACY" - Involvement in family, community and volunteer activities. [*Application required*, deadline April 30]

CATHERINE E. REIMER MEMORIAL AWARD - Highest mark in HNSC 2150 Composition, Functional and Nutritional Properties of Food for a student in Human Ecology and Agriculture and is proceeding to next academic year.

Entering from U1

FAIRGRIEVE McBANE AWARD IN NUTRITION - High standing among those students entering Human Nutritional Sciences.

HELEN S. MAROY SCHOLARSHIP IN HUMAN ECOLOGY  - Highest standing among students entering the Health Sciences or Health Studies program.

HUMAN ECOLOGY ENDOWMENT FUND SCHOLARSHIP FOR ABORIGINAL STUDENTS - Completion of U1 with a min GPA of 3.0. All Aboriginal Students in the Faculty of Human Ecology are eligible to apply. Application required.

LEWIS E. LLOYD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Highest standing among those students entering Human Ecology.

NANCY BLACK MEMORIAL ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP IN HUMAN ECOLOGY - Completion of U1 or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 3.5, shows evidence of extracurricular involvement (eg., community service, music, art, drama, athletics, student government, volunteering). [*Application required*, deadline September 30.]

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Highest standing among those students entering into Textile Sciences.

The Dean's Honour Roll

The Dean's Honour List is reserved for undergraduate students whose term grade point average is 3.5 or better based on a minimum of 12 credit hours. The names of these students are posted annually on the honour roll outside the Dean's Office.

Degree with Distinction

Students who complete the entire program with a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better are granted their degree WITH DISTINCTION. The names of these students are posted on the honour roll outside the Dean's Office.

Bursaries

Human Ecology students are eligible for certain bursaries offered through the Financial Aid & Awards Office at the University of Manitoba (422 University Centre). Check with that office for a complete list and applicant information specifically for Human Ecology Students. Examples of bursaries follow: Campbell Soup Co. Human Ecology Loan Fund

Short-term loan assistance is available to students with temporary financial need in the Faculty of Human Ecology. Please ask in the Human Ecology General Office, Room 209.
