Rock Climbing Research Study
Conducted by Krystal Merrells, Dr. Candice Rideout and
Dr. Miyoung Suh

Who is conducting this research?
Krystal Merrells is a student at the University of Manitoba and has been rock climbing, indoors and outdoors, for 8 years. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in biochemistry and is currently studying nutrition. Krystal works with a sports dietitian in Winnipeg where she gives presentations to various sports teams as well as writes for the Canadian Sports Centre of Manitoba and the Dietitians of Canada Sport Nutrition Network newsletters. She has also been involved in nutrition research for almost 4 years in Dr. Suh's laboratory, and has even had the chance to do a nutrition case study in rock climbers. This research followed 2 male rock climbers on their self-organized rock climbing and camping trip. This study is being published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism. For a synopsis of the research, please go to Krystal’s rock climbing-nutrition blog at onsitenutrition.blogspot.com.
What is this research about and how can I participate?
We are currently doing a study on what rock climbers eat and why they choose those foods when they are at home training compared to when they are out climbing and camping at the cliffs. This will help determine possible dietary recommendations and/or provide a basis for future research in nutrition and rock climbing. We are very excited about this nutrition research survey, and hope you will contribute to research in nutrition and rock climbing by participating! To participate in the study, you need to be between the ages of 18 and 55 and in the past year have been on at least one outdoor rock climbing-camping trip, minimum of 5 days long.

Results of this study will be summarized and posted at onsitenutrition.blogspot.com by May 2009 so that you can see the results of the study you helped complete!
