Field Experience - El Salvador

Field experience in El Salvador

FSS students completed a field experience in El Salvador during spring break 2010, and may have the opportunity to do so during summer session 2012. This six credit hour course will begin with preparatory classes and discussion sessions held well in advance of departure from Canada.  In the last two weeks prior to departure from Canada, three to four classes each week will be held in the evenings.

The in-country portion of the program will begin with orientation to the history and culture of El Salvador as well as intensive language training designed to facilitate work in the community.

Students will be based in Santa Catarina Masauat and will work under the direction of an onsite field experience supervisor.   Projects developed in cooperation with the onsite field experience supervisor and the community will be the focus of student activity in the course.

Students will work in teams carrying out projects and working with community professionals. Projects may include early literacy programs and material development, community development initiatives, family programs to promote health, wellbeing and active living, and a variety of school-based programs for children and youth. Debrief activities back in Canada will include the opportunity to share course experiences with members of the University of Manitoba community.
