The Faculties of Education, Human Ecology, Nursing, and Social Work, in conjunction with the Canadian NGO, Solidarity In Action Inc. are offering a three week interprofessional service learning course to Peru in June, 2013.
Students will volunteer in developing communities, such as San Genero and San Juan de Miraflores near Lima, and will participate in activities, including conducting community needs assessments, teaching English to children and adults, working with children with exceptionalities, assisting in medical clinics, and supporting a variety of community development initiatives. Daily group discussions and debriefing about social issues, educational topics, and ways in which people from different professions can work together in community development will help participants learn more about themselves and how they can work across disciplinary boundaries.
During the three weeks, participants will have the opportunity to experience the rich culture and history of Peru through Spanish lessons, community dinners, and visits to historically significant sites such as Machu Picchu and Cusco.
