Manitoba looks for weekend split on Saturday

SASKATOON - University of Saskatchewan Huskie Colin Patterson gave his team a 3-2
win on a goal with 52 seconds left in Friday’s game against the
University of Manitoba Bisons at Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink. Patterson and Huskies leading scorer Mason Wallin went flying toward
the Bisons net after a turnover in the neutral zone. Wallin passed the
puck at the last second across the crease to Patterson who beat
Manitoba goalie Krister Toews. “Sometimes your messages go unheard,” said Huskies head coach Dave
Adolph. “We’ve said all week that we were going to face a desperate
team and not only a desperate team but an emerging team in our league.
They played us hard for the first, two periods. What a heck of a game.” The No. 4 ranked Huskies opened the scoring just 1:04 into the first
period when a Steven Gillen shot from the blue line was tipped past
Toews top shelf, glove side by Casey Lee. The Bisons fought back to tie
the game just 3:50 later when Manitoba rookie Mike Hellyer had a pass
find him at the side of the Huskie net. Saskatchewan was given a prime opportunity to get the go-ahead goal
with a five-on-three advantage for 44 seconds after Chris Falloon took
an interference penalty and David Brown took a roughing penalty. The
Huskies managed to score 37 seconds after Falloon’s penalty ended. Brad
Erickson hit the back of the net at 12:00 mark. The Bisons had two five-on-three opportunities in the second period but
were unable to capitalize on either advantage. Manitoba tied the game 4:18 into the third period on an unassisted goal
by Richard Wood. The game stayed tied at two until Patterson scored the
game winning goal. With 52 seconds left, Manitoba pulled Toews to try to tie the game once
again but were unable to keep the puck in the Huskies zone. Toews stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced in the game, while the
Huskies Jeff Harvey stopped 28 of 30 shots. With the win the Huskies move to 14-3-4, while the Bisons drop to
9-9-1. The Huskies also take a season series lead against the Bisons at
3-2. The two teams will battle again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Game
time is 7 p.m.
